Approx. how far do you travel from home for a 3 day weekend to go camping?

Bring in the middle of Texas, It is at least 4 hours in any direction just to get out of the state.

Living in congested CT, driving the first 100 miles is a chore. After that, in most directions, the driving gets easier.....

Age is a factor (I'm getting smarter). I can do the driving, but it reminds me of those stressed out faces on drivers trying to get to onto Cape Cod (for a 'relaxing' weekend), via one of the 2 bridges, in traffice jams 3-5 miles long.... or, how much stress am I willing to put up with to get somewhere to 'relax'.....

For me, I'd rather drive an hour and have more relaxation time.. Or, since I'm retired, I would arrive on Thursday and leave on Monday.

I flew to Hawaii once for a one week vacation. I later realized I had spent one full day out of 7 on an airplane to get there and back... That ratio was a bit out of whack.

One of the reasons I brought this up is the fact that I live in Florida near Ft. Lauderdale. It is 450 miles to that Georgia/Florida stateline, so for us to go anywhere out of state it takes a great deal of time.

We've asked this question over on the TearJerkers board and the answer was not how far, but how long. I would drive 5 hours one way for a 3 day trip.

Amazing how our perspective has changed.

Before retirement, drive time and time of sunset was more important than distance. We did a lot of tent camping and, when the kids were little, setting up in the dark with a bunch of tired kids wasn't fun.

Now, after retirement, we can allow travel time on top of the camping time.

Living in Texas certainly changed our perspective on drive time and distance too.

Living in South Dakota, we have some great places to camp within an hour of our house, but travel to Denver and the Rocky Mountains for the weeekend all the time (425 miles each way).

My perspective of mileage has changed quite a bit from when I grew up in Detroit, and a 100 mile trip took a lot of planning. Not having traffic to deal with and a 75 mph speed limit on the interstate expands the range we will travel on a long weekend.

400 is about max for us. Would rather keep it at 300 or less. From my house to Little Talbot, Fl was 399 with only 25 of that off the xway which made for good cruising speed. Going to Pisgah national Forest is only abou 350 but takes an extra hour or so. Type of roads makes a difference.

Lets say the 3 day weekend is Friday, Saturday and Sunday...

I could leave work Thursday at 2:30. And assuming I had reservations, I would say, I could drive about 5 hours before I got tired, grouchy, and you know...

Sounds like about 300 miles to me...

Hi all,

We drive usually twice a year to Greenville,SC from our home in PA. That's about 630 miles one way. We attend a kayaking event at Lake Jocassee held twice a year.We combine our trip with visiting friends{old neighbors}, teardrop owners,kayaking buddies,and camping.This year we may have teardroppers join kayakers at Jocassee. This should be a fun trip this spring. Also going to the Adirondacks of NY this summer,and that's about 450 miles for us. The teardrop will see some miles this year.

Hey Woody,

Carla and I generally travel over 450 miles for a 3 day weekend. There is a gathering of some sort going on somewhere. So I really don't mind the hard traveling.
