TearTable in Sketchup

Postby Corwin C » Sat Mar 03, 2012 8:47 pm

Learning new things ... both in Sketchup and with the recent forum improvements ...

I drew the TearTable in Sketchup for practice and to help everyone better visualize the table and how it goes together. Each part is either a group or a component so it can easily be pulled out of the assembly to see detail. I would really like to see more pictures of tables that have been built. So PLEASE post a picture (or several hint hint) if you build one.

I'm wondering if eight, 3/4" x 3/4" x 5" wood cleats glued & fastened to the underside the seats would be more Substantial than 3/8" dowels in end grain.

Danny,

I used the dowels simply so that the parts would stack flat. Also, the top and seats are "reversible" (I have built a table with a felt top on one side to play cards and a formica on the other for meals/messes.) Cleats would work fine as would routing out slots in the ply as Ward did. The dowels are essentially there just to locate the table top and seats so they don't slide around. On all of the tables I've built, I've only seen one broken dowel and that was by a helper that lifted one side of the table top and twisted the dowel in two on the other side (I'm not sure it wasn't intentional.) There was no damage to the ply on either side, but the dowel had to be drilled out and replaced.

Corwin,
I understand where you're coming from.
I like Wards solution too but a bit more involved for the average woodworker.

Thom

The only place that the TearTable plans are available is on the tnttt website at the beginning of this thread. I have no intention to offer it anywhere else. If you missed them, the links to download them are here and the original thread is here.
