Recycle old entrance doors?

Postby UkuleleRob » Sat Apr 04, 2015 8:17 am

Hey there;
I was scrapping out a old entrance door, steel skin (Maybe 16 ga.) and foam core. After I tore it apart I was looking at the parts thinking maybe there might be useable sheet steel and foam, maybe 79 by 30 inches useable. It was a 32 inch wide door. The foam was about inch and three quarters thick though. I like to recycle whatever I can so, anybody have some thoughts on this? No cost material is always a plus for me.

Perhaps I'm alone here?

The steel skins are flat. I thought that a person could make fenders or boxes. Maybe if you had a few of them shield the underside of a trailer body? The foam is just insulation. I could find a purpose for that somewhere.

Just a thought

Rob.

Nope, Your not alone!

I was thinking about repurposing some interior doors that I noticed at the local recycle store. The skin is luan, so I wouldn't use it outside, But I think the will make some great bulkheads inside. Still thinking on it.

English Joke: That's cool, you can make your own Doormobile....

(Dormobile is as English for motorhome as Winnebago is in Murrican.)

I see the attraction. However, when pondering any material, recycled or otherwise, you have to ask yourself "Can I get it in sufficient quantity?"

Good thought on the quanity thing. Most of those doors aren't just flat steel.

Yah, most of the ones I see on people's houses are some variety of faux wood panel effect.

However, inside apartment buildings and for the service entrances at malls and strip malls they use featureless flat ones, so looking for those kinds of places undergoing reno work might be productive.

edit: Motels too probably.

This from someone with ZERO experience in building TDs.

I'd think it'd be way easier to use interior doors for walls and bulkheads. A biscuit joiner, some glue and proceed. This... assuming.... (yeah I know), that you are skinning it, on the exterior at least. Old latchset holes would probably be too much 'ventilation'.

The hollow core doors are to be had at Habitat. Now all you've got to contend with is vertical seams.

Or am I missing something?

LOL, not much R value however.

Door skins are usually MDF as well
Dosn't like the slightest bit of moisture
