Bonding to fiberglass components with MASTER SEAL NP1

Postby dogscats » Fri May 06, 2016 10:27 pm

I am getting a chance to try doing some thing with the fiberglass components again. I lost out on the curved parts . Forced over time at work.
What I'll have a chance with is more of a square. and flat.
I think it will work on the weekender' nano weekender, modified explorer pod any thing that mostly flat profiles.
My question is has anyone done this.I will be bonding fiberglass to 1/4" luan. If you used used MASTER SEAL NP1 how did it hold up over time

Is Master Seal an adhesive? Is it a urethane? Those urethane adhesives are strong if there is enough surface area and most are gap filling. I've used Gorilla glue, PL and urethane caulk with good results. I would think it would bond fiber glass to wood but have no direct experience.

"NP1 and NP2 are the industries most popular high-performance exterior grade sealant grade caulks."

It's sold as a caulking material––not an adhesive. I suspect their marketing hype, "most popular" is an exaggeration since I've never heard of it.

Weren't these fiberglass parts sold as a kit over ebay?

You might consider this West System epoxy. It won't fail, but they don't give it away either.

Fwiw,
Masterseal just new name of Sonneborn. Part of the BASF empire.

Lots of folks never heard of it as not sold at WalMart or local Homecenter, but very good chance it was used constructing their buildings. Its market aimed toward industrial users & yes, its one of the most popular.

As far as adhesive, its very good. But suitability for a task depends on configuration of the joint & amount of motion between sections. Obviously materials play into as well, its not going to stick well to some plastics, Teflon for example.

It has on the tube polyurethane sealant. There a few tubes in the box I received of glass parts. Also a few tubes of food grade sealer

Fiberglass sheeting over Luan ?

The luan will be sealed then bound over the flanges
IF you look close at the picture you can make out the flange that make the shell outside rings
