Removing Sticky Goo

Postby lfhoward » Sat Jun 11, 2016 12:50 pm

I recently skinned my trailer in 0.040 aluminum and there is some sticky residue left on the panels after removing the plastic coating. The sticky stuff is only on the roof panels. I suspect this is because they were in direct sun for a couple days before I removed the plastic. Now the sticky residue has picked up a lot of pollen and dust, and the white roof looks pretty terrible.

What is an effective way of removing this sticky stuff?

Thanks!
Lauren

I found that WD40 was the best general purpose goo remover. And the cheapest by far. And I alreadyhad some

I also use olive oil to remove price tags an other stickers from kitchen items. It tastes better than WD40

But I was removing the sticky tape backing from old gasket material from aluminium.

Regardless the goo remover you use be sure to test in an inconspicuous area before going crazy.

I second the WD40 for removing the sticky stuff. It also removes tar from your vehicle / trailer if you get any on it. :D

if Wd40 doesn't work fast , try naphtha. naphtha will not leave a residue. also if you can, put a layer of paper towels, apply the naphtha and cover it with plastic, and then wait 10" or so.

Coleman fuel is Naptha btw.
I kind of like Goo Gone or other orange cleaners.

Coleman is a bit more flammable that spirits of naptha. Goo-Gone and lighter fluid, are basically naptha with a few other 'perfumes'. Orange cleaners can sometimes create a problem with some materials if you want to re-glue. Try naptha (it's by far the cheapest solution, too!) first.

By far the best product is Eucalyptus Oil but I don't know if it is available in Yankland

I'm following up to post what I used to remove the sticky goo, in case it helps someone else with the same problem. I ended up using Goof Off remover, which is like Goo Gone on steroids. It has acetone and xylene in it, so you'll want to wear solvent resistant gloves. But wow! It took the adhesive off in the first pass with hardly any scrubbing! Very impressed. I tested it first on a scrap piece of aluminum to make sure it didn't damage the paint, and it didn't. So Goof Off is my recommendation for dealing with sticky residue on roofers aluminum.

I used goof off to remove the adhesive residue from an old vinyl wrap. The key ingredient is the acetone. it works great be evaporates very quickly.
