FRP bargain, questions

Postby Idragon » Wed Sep 20, 2017 5:21 am

Hi all,

I'm a newb, have been planning for a while but recently started to gather for my build. I have had a HF trailer for years and a Teardrop gives me a great way to re purpose it from it original use. I was doing the pro's and cons of FRP and PMF when I came across (18) sheets of 4' x 8' RFP for $35.00 (total, not each) @ a local *Restore and the decision was made for me.

So I have these questions:

1. Obviously there is a textured and a flat side on these panels, is it possible to use either face?

2. I see a lot of people using some type of tar to protect the bottom of their trailers before they begin construction, is there any reason with such a surplus that I can't or shouldn't use RFP?

3. Can RFP be shaped with a heat gun?

Any input appreciated.

*Restore ~ outlets in conjunction with Habitat for Humanity selling all kinds of furniture and building materials for on the cheap.

Before I found this forum I stumbled on a salvage yard with large rolls of FRP 6' 8" wide. I covered the roof, exterior walls, inside walls and floor with it. I put the flat side down.
I found FRP mastic at lowes in a 5 gallon bucket. The worst thing about FRP is cutting. The only way is with a shear. That works great. Use Krylon paint for plastics. Colors are limited. Sherwin Williams suggested two coats of Krylon and then any outside paint. I do not understand your shaping question as the product bends quite easily. 10 years and over 30000 miles and it still looks good.

Thanks Larry,

I appreciate the feedback. By shaping I meant melting it into forms that it would stay shaped into for trim, shades, fenders, etc.
