I am at the point where I am going to skin the top with plywood and I bought some cheap 1/8 luan plywood because it is all I could find. It was 15 bucks a sheet. I am having second thoughts and and trying to decide if I should spend the money and time seeking out marine ply. It seems to be about 40 a sheet for 1/8 inch. Can you guys give me some insight? I am planing on screwing it to the spars and treating it with thinned poly. I am also planning on fiberglassing the edges to seal it up. Please send me your ideas and concerns. After the ply is attached I have to source a supplier for aluminum. I need help in that department too! Not having the marine plywood is holding me back and I can't find it locally in the san diego area. I did find 1/4 douglas fir marine ply but I want to go with 1/8 inch. Please help!

I have used FRP instead of plywood. Regular stuff form the big box store. You never have to worry about kerfing, bending or rot and you dont have to treat it as long as it isnt exposed to the sun. On my last one I covered the FRP with aluminum. The one I did last year was covered with FRP and then pool wall.

Call up your lumberyards––not Lowes or Home Depot–– and ask if they can order 5'x5' 1/8" Baltic Birch plywood. It should be about $15 a sheet. You can throw a chunk in a bucket of water and pull it out this spring and it will not delaminate. If they won't order it, call a couple of cabinet shops.

If my lumberyard can get it here in the middle of Idaho, yours can too. The stuff is fine.

Pool wall is the outside of an above ground pool. They come in vinyl and or steel. A friend works for a pool company. Plenty of free above ground pools when people are trading up or just getting rid of them.

Aha. And the sheets are big enough to serve as what a roof skin, glued to the plywood or foam, rather than using aluminum?

Thanks for all of your insight guys. I sourced some 5x5 baltic birch the only problem is my trailer is wider than 5 feet. I am going to use it anyway with a seam. I will post pics when I am done.
