NRP For Exterior Skin

Postby jwh92020 » Thu May 17, 2018 11:12 am

I'm building a 7 x 10 standy and I'm thinking of using the 1/16th inch NRP for the exterior skin. The walls are going to be 1 x 3 framing, 2 x 2 roof 'joists". Interior walls will be 1/8" luan underlay ply (not sure if they will get clear coated or painted) and the exterior walls will be 5mm luan underlay covered in the NRP. Each side will take 2 1/2 sheets of the NRP, front and rear will take 2 sheets each. Do I glue the entire wall and stick the NRP to it and use mechanical fasteners (ie - staples) around the perimeter of the sheet or do I float the sheet and just fasten the perimeter? The passenger side of the trailer will take full sun all day long and I'd like to avoid bubbles (fought them on a fiberglass TT we had long ago. I would rather not paint it, but if UV fade becomes an issue, i"ll paint it. Thanks for any info y'all can give me.

I have used FRP over foam and used PL adhesive with a notched trowel. I would think that just floating NRP or FRP can have some problems with swelling and bubbling from the sun. Neither of them are rated for UV exposure.

I'm not averse to painting it if need be. You glued the whole thing? Have you had any issues with bubbling?

It is used as a hunting blind and has sat in the woods for the last 3 years. No issues as of yet. Use the search bar up on top. Type in FRP. There have been many builds done on here using FRP, some people painted and some did not.

My teardrop has FRP on the outside and the inside. Sherwin Williams recommends using Krylon brand paint for the FRP. Krylon is for plastic surfaces. Not many colors available in Krylon so we put two coats of Krylon on then a good coat of exterior latex in a color my wife OK'ed. Eleven years and over 36,000 miles and all is well. In the summertime on only 1 side in the hot sun I will get a bubble the dimensions of a softball. Only about 1/2 in deep. When traveling or when out of the sun it goes away. Larry
