More: Taping the edges!

Postby BulletProof » Wed Mar 27, 2019 11:34 am

I have NEVER used fibreglass before. I am going to build a teardrop - but angular - not rounded back (like attached photo).

I want to use West System epoxy and fibreglass tape along the top edge where it is most susceptible to water intrusion. I was thinking a 4" tape.

But what happens when the angle changes? Do I trim the tape so it lays flat (v-notch it)? Or stop and start again at the new angle? It seems to me that the transition point will make a weak point in the water barrier.

Your help is appreciated!

To answer your question, cut a v-notch.

But read this thread: http://www.tnttt.com/viewtopic.php?t=34887&p=633840

Getting fiberglass tape to lay flat on both sides of a 90ยบ angle can be challenging (it's stiff). You have to round the corners and using biaxial tape is a big deal.

Thank you for your reply!

I've been derailed off of my original plan by some enthusiastic members here, and am now looking at PMF.

Trailer arrived last week, tongue box arrived Monday, electronics and other parts arrived yesterday, door ships next week, windows should be here next week! I still have a month to figure out the skinning!

Plan to start cutting wood beginning of April! Camping in May?....June... July... August....
