I am wanting to sell my Chevy HHR and go back to a truck I had 10 years ago-- a Dodge Dakota- My friend has a Dakota and a Prowler Lynx 185a 5th wheel. I have started looking for a lower mileage retiree trade-in Dakota truck.
I used to get 22mpg with my 1994 318 Dakota on the road. I really really think a smaller sized truck would be a better rig to pull my Weekender.

After the first trip with the Nissan 4 cylinder, I'll say it was a success. Did 1,000 miles & average fuel mileage was 20.5 with the teardrop attached. I did do some drafting behind larger trucks, ran at slower speeds (65 mph) & had to use lower gears in the mountains, but I'm happy it worked out as well as it did. Higher torque would have been better on hills.

2007 Nissan 4 cylinder (2.5L), 5 speed, plain vanilla without any frills, just air conditioning, a radio & cruise control. If I ever do something different, it would be a V8 conversion with a mild cam for towing at about 1,900 RPM & automatic transmission. Backing up our driveway off the street, with the standard transmission & low torque, is a real PITA!

2006 Toyota Tacoma, manual transmission. Not a lot of power but handles fine. HAve to shift to low gear on steeper hills. Want to try my 2006 Subaru legacy wagon, but it's low to the ground so wonder if that is a good idea. How much ground clearance is "minimum"? Opinions welcome.

More than the largest obstacle you plan to drive over.

Smart-alec remarks aside, most any TV would have enough ground clearance for on-pavement use. A lot of builders on the forum have changed their axles from under- to over-slung for a low rider look. It's all about where you think you will be going. (That probably wasn't much help. Sometimes they call me Capn Obvious.)

My TV is an '01 Taco 4WD TRD with AT. It downshifts on freeway overpasses. Trailer ground clearance matches the truck's. It looks better, and if the truck can get over something, the trailer can too. I hope.
I'll burn that bridge when I come to it.

Ive got humongeous ground clearance but it certainly isnt for everybody.
Has its issues acess wise and build complications but plenty of advantages

Because I have a 39 foot Montana 5th wheel and a 17 foot R Pod I use a Dodge 3500 Mega Cab 1 ton diesel to tow both with. Not at the same time though.

I briefly owned a lifted ford 350 van 4wd but when I hooked it up to the teardrop it looked ridiculous. And I felt like I was wagging a tail. I like the vehicle being scaled to the trailer.

Oh but what a fantastic beach vehicle that 350 would be at Cape Hatteras! 8)

Just changed out tow vehicles. My 2014 Cherokee had to go to the shop one to many times. It was traded in on this:

Yes they do. With the available v-6 and tow package it was rated for 3500 lbs. I really liked it but mine was just not reliable.

Hopefully you will have better luck with this vehicle. Sometimes I think some cars were put together on the wrong day of the week or something.
