I finally took pictures of my tow cars, I have been busy getting and cutting the steel for the frame for my (future) TD, and have been putting this off. I start welding on that tomorrow.

I use a 2011 Jetta Sportswagen TDI to tow my Little Guy 5 wide. Cuts me back to 30 mpg with the canoe on top but that's life!

I tow the Command Post with either a 1990 Isuzu Trooper, or a 1988 GMC S-15 pickup. both have 2.8 liter V6's. The pickup is an automatic. The trooper is a 5 speed manual, part time 4 wheel drive.

I had been towing with a 2012 Honda CRV (with a std. 2.0L engine) but found that the extra weight caused it to always downshift 2 gears going up even the slightest hill, and my TD only weighs 700lbs. My mileage would drop from above 30mpg to 15-20 depending upon the terrain, headwinds, etc.

I just traded it in on a 2014 Mazda CX-5 that in 2014 has a 2.5L engine and 6 gears instead of 4. I'm happy with the vehicle so far (except for the buggy USB audio and bluetooth electronics) but have not had an opportunity to tow anything yet since the teardrop is hibernating for the winter. I'm hoping the extra power, torque, and gearing will handle towing a lot easier and I should get a lot better gas mileage.

If you look at the CX-5 note that the Touring and Grand Touring models have the 2.5L engine, not the Sport model.

Was hoping to tow my trailer with my 1975 Saab 96V4 but it might end up a bit heavy but Ive got a 2010 Renault 1.5DCI as an everyday car so might have to see if I can find a tow hitch for it. .

In November, I bought a 2014 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk v-6. It pulls my trailer like it was not there.

That other Sab would make a fine tow vehicle too. Did you ever try it with the 96V4?

Towed the caravan shell a few miles to my friends car repair shop and it did that OK but when it is finished I think the weight will be too much for the poor old thing, it only has about 60hp.

I had planned to tow with my HHR or Cobalt, if it ended up at around 1000 lbs loaded; at 1475 lbs finished/loaded weight, that's not a possibility. So, the TV of choice will be my 2004 Chevy 2500HD (with a '98 GMC 1500 Ext.Cab as backup). Both pickups have been beefed up, with overbuilt trannies and extra suspension perks, to tow much heavier trailers, and I use a WD hitch on everything, so the 1475 lbs is like nothing to them.
