towing with a chevy cruze

I am thinking of using my 2014 LT cruze. Well its my only option LOL but I am worried because of the 1000lbs max limit. Anyone tow with such a light tow weight? I though about trading it in but if it will work with out killing myself or anyone else i'll use it.

A friend in our group tows a 5 X 8 teardrop with a Cruze. We went all over Wyoming last year through the mountains and up the Bear Tooth Hwy. No issues. I think the most trouble he had was finding a hitch.

The key is to build as light as possible, and to pack light. My Focus has a tow rating of zero.
If the crude is sold in other countries, find out what the tow rating is there. In the rest of the world a focus can tow 2k. Your crude may be more able than the US lawyers say.
You could build a foamie the is much lighter than 1k, with wood you will come out very close to 1k. Leaving little weight for cooking gear etc.

Thanks for the replies, I am in the process of redoing the cabinets and hopefully reduce some weight. After I am all done I will pack the TD with gear and use my buddies truck to take it to a scrap yard and use there scale to see what it weighs.

2007 Beetle 4x8 teardrop. Tow rating is zero.
I pack very light and I do think the manual transmission makes a difference but I can forget I have the teardrop behind me.

The Smart Fortwo is not made to tow anything but I have seen pictures of it towing small campers and trailers.

There is even a section at the Smart Car of America forum where they show trailers that can be towed by a Fortwo.

I believe the Fiat 500 is in the same category.

Or even the Mini Cooper?

Perhaps it is more finding a trailer that best suits your tow vehicle?

I too wanted to tow with a compact ('12 Ford Focus), but, I've decided against it for now. I wasn't concerned if the Focus could tow the TD, rather could it stop it. I did not think of electric brakes when I designed my TD. Maybe some others could chime in here about electric brakes and their usefulness with compact cars. I would think it would be worth the extra dollars to install trailer brakes no matter how light you build.

Tim,

My trailer came in at about 2k lbs loaded.
With electric brakes and the right controller I can set the brakes from light braking to locking them up and burning rubber every time.
That being said, you still have to remember you are not driving a sports car and give yourself plenty of room.

We tow ours with my MINI Clubman sometimes. It pulls it just fine. Like others have said, you have to keep in mind that panic stops are not
your friend. Keep a lot of space between you and the car in front.
