Inch & a quarter hitch issues?

Postby jondbar628 » Fri May 13, 2016 5:16 pm

I know a lot of folks are towing with smaller-rated T.V.'s, so I'm wondering if there have been many issues (failures, bending, etc.) of the 1 1/4 in. hitch. I'm not worried about the receiver tube, but I have some trepidations about the smaller drawbar, especially with a 5 or more inch rise. (Twisting forces during turns) I've recently gone to a lower-rated TV, (300/3500 lb), and the only after-market hitches available for this vehicle (a Buick) are 1 1/4 (checked several on-line outlets).......Or do most use a 1 1/4-to-2 in. adapter/extension to get to a 2" drawbar?....Loaded, my build should come in at about 1400 Lbs.........
Any and all feedback on this is greatly appreciated..................smooth roads to all...........

I had one of those hitches on a small car years ago. never had any issues. I don't see how there should be any concerns unless one was to overload it well beyond the rated capacity.

I am towing close to 2000lbs on 1 1/4 with no issues. Everything is rated to 3500 lbs. I am not sure why you are concerned with an inch and a quarter system provided you don't exceed the capacity

The biggest drawback for the 1 1/4 reciever is that most bike carriers require a 2 inch reciever. Of course this is only a problrm for some of us. :-)

I towed a 2400 lb trailer over 2000 miles, much of which was unimproved roads, with a 1-1/4 hitch. No issues. I wouldn't worry so long as you stay within the rating of the hitch and drawbar.

I'm towing using a 5 3/8" rise drawbar on my 1 1/4" hitch. I've had no issues. I explored every option I could to make sure I was making the right choice for my setup. The adapters reduce your weight capacity by 50% and is another point for failure so that was definitely out.

I'm glad you got your issues resolved. Thought I'd throw this in since I'm using the 5+" drawbar you asked about.

Happy camping!
