The Roswell

You've asked for them, so here they are - plans for The Roswell.

I've modified the fenders to make them practical to build out of ply - those double-curvature ones in the sketch would be a huge amount of work, probably more than the trailer body!





The PDF form of the drawings contains all the panels of the trailer drawn at 1:12 scale, so anyone who fancies it can print them, cut them out and made a 1:12 scale model.

Hey guys, you can get airplane wheelpants that look correct from Wag-Aero or Aircraft Spruce, if the wheel size isn't too big. do a Google scearch in images for wheel pants, ...........Bob

You know some will ask so where is the stealth? Can you work it up some time in the next year? I would like to see a good model and drawing to see if maybe if it would fit my taste better. Also could you guys use old fenders from an old car? Say thirtyish for the wheel pants. I think you could get remakes from JC whitney or some of the other places like.

Yup, they'll be coming some time soon. It would be a lot easier to build and a rear hatch might be practical. However the door/hatch would require some ingenuity to get a good seal.

Also could you guys use old fenders from an old car? Say thirtyish for the wheel pants.

For the Roswell, that's tricky, as the backs of the fenders are exposed so much - not only at the back where the body tapers away, but also along the lower inside where the body curves in (like a rocker panel). So the fenders need to be shaped and finished on both sides.

Aircraft wheel pants would certainly do if the cost was right - it would probably be necessary to go down one or two wheel sizes, but the Roswell will be light so that's no problem.

6:00 X 6 fairing styled after the late model Cessna 172 and is used on just about any designed aircraft. Measure 42" by 8". Overall size: 44"L x 8-1/4"W Opening Size: 8-1/4"W x 23-1/4"L

Seems to me that this might work on a 12" HF Wheel...

6:00 X 6 fairing styled after the late model Cessna 172

It pretty much works - a 6:00x6 aviation tyre is 17" diam x 6" width which is about the same as an 8" tyre - a 12" tyre is 21-22" diameter.

Several factors:
- Road tyres need to stick out of the pants further as roads have obstacles like kerbs (sorry, curbs) that are not often found on runways....
- The wheel pant moves with the wheel on landing gear, so either you have to rig up brackets to do that on a trailer, or the pant has to be mounted high enough that the wheel doesn't hit it at full bounce.
- That brochure says there are bulkheads inside the pants - they probably have to be removed to make space for the larger tyre. But that's still a lot less work than making your own fenders.

However, the size remains a killer. Here is the Roswell with these fenders to scale:

Well you said it would be easier to go and build out of fiberglass anyway so why not the fender's or wheelpants also. Sucks but hey it will look right and you couls use the tire size you want. If you have an old aircraft bone yard close go there and just look as some bigger aircraft had biggerwheel pants. I don't know of any on the eastcoast near me but in ohio I knew where a couple were. The stealth would be ahelluva lot easier. I still say the fenders of an old car with the added sheet metal work would be a little better than fiberglass work, but thats my stand No matter what the builder better be good at his fabricating of parts or it will look awkeward.
