I recently made the acquaintance of someone who hunts and camps in Big Cypress.

No facilities, no hook-ups, no marked sites, but if you have a hunting license, you can camp.

I'll grill him for more information today, but has anyone camped there?

That is what is called real camping. I dont think you even need a hunting license to camp. I would check into that a little more before I headed out. Dale G. Smith

If it is in the Big Cypress Preserve, it is Probably the Burns Lake Campground.

Very pretty area.

Here's a link to give you all the info:

As a bonus you can go by and see Clyde Butcher's (my hero) Gallery. It is right in that area.

Dale--that's what intrigues me about it.

I mean, I wouldn't go near the place between June and September BUGS!!!), but it's only like a 90-minute drive for me, and it sounds like a cool place for a quick overnight.

Thanks, Jay!

I use to have 5 acres in Picayune Strand State Forest, right next to it, but I never went into Big Cypress.

And Jay--you're probably right about which campground he goes to for hunting, only open for 2 months. But there are some others.

Well, I know where I'm going next, I think.

Thanks, Jack.

Since I posted and investigated Jay's link, I see there are sites with full hookups. And Jay was right about the no hook-up area I was talking about only open for a few months, just for hunting.

You actually even need a hunting license to book your overnight(s).

And yeah, Bill--that's where I'm going next. Early to mid-January to get the feel of it. Early enough so I can squeeze another two or three trips in before you can't go near the place. (Bugs.)

But the weird thing is, no reservations accepted at ANY of the sites. Looks like I'm gonna have to make some freinds over there.

It's maybe a 2-hour drive for me at the most.

I've spent a lot of time in the area, but never IN Big Cypress, and the bird wildlife is beyond belief.
