Putting out feeler for a future gathering

Postby Jst83 » Sun Jun 10, 2007 12:15 pm

I used to go rafting on the Nantahala in North Carolina every spring. And was thinking this would make a great place for a gathering. There are lots of hiking trails, off road biking trails and of coarse rafting. Group rafts and single rafts ( that I prefer ) we were usually on the river by 9am and easily off the river by 2ish plenty of time for plenty of other activities

Would anyone be interested in this type of outing?

Here's the link to the Campground and the Outdoor center.

What a cool area.
You gotta ride the train!

Isnt the water flow regulated by the hydro dam upstream?

Yes if you check out the river early morning it's very low until they turn on the water. And it's very cool water wakes you right up in the morning

That's what I'm shooting for I've pushed my limit with the wife this year.
I talked to the camp ground, it's a small one but they could group us together no problem. Some electric site some not Very close to the outdoor center.

Give it some thought I'd like to meet some people from the south.
My goal is to hit all the regions at some point.
It's a great place to spend the weekend lots to do. I miss going down there that's why I'm thinking two birds with one stone
One downfall the campground only has 41 sites. But we might be able to arrange to double up if needed.
I may be getting the cart before the horse after all it is 11 months away that I'm thinking

I'll have to see how my wife's job pans out. It would be nice to go to that area. One good thing is that it'd be close to the Lodge outlet.

You already have every size they make. Well... except one and you can't get it there.

Not to change anything. I just wanted to let you know about another campground in that area. It was started by friends of ours in 2004, I think. We go there pretty often. It is different than your normal campground. There are no fires at the campsites. There is one big fire pit that everybody sits around at night. Quiet time is whenever the last person goes to sleep. I have woke up at 3AM and there was still laughing going on at the fire. It was originally a motorcycle campground but RV's, campers, and cars are welcome too. They have been cooking breakfast and supper for the campers. Just help yourself and leave a donation in the jar. That may change. Fred died in Jan. of this year and Mo depends on a lot of volunteer time from campers to help get the meals ready and was dishes.

Your not changeing anything. Nothing is set I just wanted to see who might be up for a get together in the are. I'll have to check out the site a little better. Does it have electric? and how far is it from the NOC because that's where I love to raft.

So does this mean you might be up for a gathering in the spring?

I'd LOVE to go EAST...Spring would be a great time for it too...Since we are commiting the the fall stuff (Last Gasp and LCG). I'll need something to get me through the depressing Winter months! Knowing there will be something out East in the Spring may just do the trick!!!

We'll keep it in mind FOR SURE.

P.S. Hey Paul, can we go???

I don't know how far it is from NOC but here is a map. I would guess it is about 5 miles. Have you ever gone north on Hwy. 28 toward the Fontana Dam ? The highway is four lane until you get to a store on the left, then it changes to two lane. The campground is on the right just after the store. We always like to have a reason to go there.
