Campgrounds in the Asheville, NC area?

Postby retnavycpo » Sat Jul 11, 2009 3:57 pm

I run with a group called the Hash House Harriers. Anyone who knows about them also knows they call themselves "A Drinking Club With A Running Problem". There are HHH groups all over the world. I first got involved with them on Guam, and also ran with them at Iwakuni, Japan.

Anyway, if all goes well, and I am able to get the teardrop camper next week, I plan to try it out at a HHH run in Asheville, NC on July 25th.

Was wondering if anyone knows about campgrounds in the Asheville area? The HHH run will begin at a scuba shop near the Westgate Shopping center. Typically, a run is about 5K, and am not sure where it will end. Trying to find out though, from the organizers.

We camped last year at Lake Powhatan Recreation Area. It is just off of SR191 and southwest of Asheville. Close to the Blue Ridge Parkway and the WNC Arboretum. They do have showers but don't have any hookups. It is convenient to the westside of Asheville.
Here is a link to the Reserve America site for it.

Sound like my kind of group if you just drop the running part.

I was also going to recommend Lake Powhatton/Bent Creek. They have a nice swimming hole there, too. It is probably 10 minutes or so from Westgate Shopping Center, which is West Asheville.

There is camping everywhere and all over the place up here in Asheville, though. So there are a lot of places to go.

I live in East Asheville, would love to take a look at your TD if you're bringing it.
