Yaaarksha Scavenger - FINISHED AT LAST

Postby Rigsby » Tue Sep 02, 2008 4:54 pm

What is everyones view on a twin axle TD? Has anyone built one before?
Ive just aquired a twin axle chassis and im wandering wether to build my TD on this. The chassis is 50" across the top of the rails and 63" between the tyres, galvanised and running on 10"wheels, with 23" between axle centres, chassis being 8 foot+long and both axles braked
Feel free to give me your honest opinions

Not at the moment as it is stood on its side behind another trailer. At the moment it is just two chassis rails held together by the two torsion bar axles , there are no cross members , so the possibilities are endless

Steve,

Heck yeah, people build lots of different things on this forum! I built one and have enjoyed the way it has pulled and the extra room that I put into it. I will admit that it could be smaller but we are enjoying the space.

Your smaller wheels and shorter length will look wonderful with two wheels on each side. DO IT!

It will tow great, it won't be as mobile in the camping area. 4 foot tall will be plenty, and a couple extra feet in length will be very possible.

So the question is, what shape you going to build and what is stopping you?

Have a great time planning and start the sawdust as soon as you can. Whatever you do, it will be yours and it will be something you learn from and enjoy.

I wish you were closer, we could talk in person.

John

jdarks' longhaul trailer is very cool. The tandem axle can be done.

Thanks for the encouragement guys, when i get time over the weekend i will get the chassis down on to the floor and get a few measurements and ideas together and get a few pictures. I am thinking of an 8x5 size, as this will cut down on cost, especially as i will be building on a budget that my wife wont see. Whatever parts i can beg, steal, or borrow on a permenant basis i will, But first of all will be some sort of shelter to build it in

It certainly can be done, and can be both interesting (just because it is unusual) and good looking (for instance, see photo above).

Although tandem axle configurations are supposed to be more stable, I find it hard to objectively see any reason to build one in a small trailer, due to the increased weight, complexity, cost, bulk, and operational implications. Technically it can work well, but it's not trivial.

I think jdark's tandem axle teardrop is very cool. However, based on experience I've had with other trailers, I would not use a tandem axle configuration on any trailer unless I absolutely had to.

There are two main reasons why I say this:

1. Compared to a single axle trailer, they can be extremely hard to push around by hand, especially on pavement. I had a tandem axle snowmobile trailer that I got rid of for this very reason. Maybe you won't have to push your trailer around by hand very often, but when you do, you'll find yourself cursing that extra axle.

2. There is greater potential for bearing and tire failures.

But don't let me discourage you. By all means be creative and do whatever you like. I just thought I'd share my little pet peeve about tandem trailers.

Don't forget, one more axle to pay for at the toll booth.

Rigsby, You get those pictures yet?

We just can't wait forever, we are getting excited

john

I should say, I'm getting excited. I used 15 inch wheels and was thinking that smaller wheels might be more fitting

Nah.....yours looks good the way it is. I think smaller wheels would make it look silly.

Thanks Rich,

I should have said, I like mine, but your trailer is going to be a lot smaller, maybe smaller wheels would be more fitting

I just have to watch my month
