Hoosier Chapter Summer Gathering 2014

Summer Gathering in Virginia

The Teardrop City gathering (July 23-27) could be a good suppliment gathering to or our "Summer Gathering".

See Gathering thread above (in Red).

It's a 6 hour drive (from Inianapolis) but it could be a fun thing to Caravan to Virginia as a group. In 2010 it was called "The East Coast Nationals" and was well attended by the Hoosier Chapter.

In 2010, our Hoosier gathering was at Whitewater State Park (SE Indiana) and made a good starting point for those who where headed to The ECN.
I drove down to Moorehead, Kentucky to visit an old High School friend and it was a good way to break up the trip.

A southern Indiana gathering in 2014 could work well.

Anyone interested in making the trip?

Plans for the Hoosier Chapter Gathering are still in the works but a decision is coming soon.

Let's hear your thoughts.

Too far for a weekend trip. Not a bad idea, but I'd hate to "trade" a local gathering to go to this one...

I had mentioned it before ....... I thought it would be down right neighborly to combine our gathering with the Illinoise group in mid August since they will be a tiny hop over the Indiana line in Danville Illinois. Steve and Doug are trying hard to get some momentum in their group. Nancy and I enjoyed their company at one of their gatherings last fall. They are a great group. I have toured Kickapoo park where this gathering is scheduled . It is very nice and well appointed park.

Gerry, I understand that. This would be "side trip" or a totally different gathering , and in addition to our normal "Hoosier Chapter" gathering.

The only reason I suggested a south eastern Hoosier gathering is to be a "jumping off point" for anyone traveling to Virginia for the "Teardrop City" gathering.

Bob, Our normal time frame for the summer gathering has been in July (2nd or 3rd week).

There is certainly no reason we can't go to the Illinois gathering in August 7-9, in fact, it would be "neighborly".

I have plans for an outing in Nashville, IN in mid August so, for me, it could work out.

Let's see what responses we get for a "Early-August" gathering in Illinois. Maybe this could be our first "Bi-State" gathering.

I'm up for it.

Kurt, that sounds like fun. A 6 hr drive isn't too bad. I do have more TV improvements to make for a mountain crossing. I'll keep the idea in my thoughts. The Hoosier summer gathering down this way would be a near guaranteed attend for me though.
How was it there in 2010? It looks like the shade is kind of sparce.

The trees were small but there was some shade. The RV park is really clean with heated restrooms and private showers with country music playing.

The trees will be four years older in 2014 so it should be even better.

Sounds like an interesting idea then, I'm not sure if well be able to go, but a convoy down sounds like an interesting time.

Susan started a new job in August, so she doesn't get as much time off as she used to, so we need to budget wisely :)

I think we are interested in this idea. It was a great park with great shower houses. Timing may be the issue for us.

The VA trip is out for us. We'll just be getting back from 9 days camping with the Trailmen (used to be scouts) at Ft. Wilderness at Disney 8) ; and then a conference in KC :? that weekend. I wonder how The Patrol Box will do down there?

Danville in August with the Illinois folks sounds like a blast.

Pete, as soon as there are more details about the Danville, IL gathering I'll make sure to alert the group.

The surrounding State Chapter gatherings would be fun to do occasionally. We have lots to choose from. With Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, and Kentucky we might have a good time going as a chapter to some of these.

Here is an other possibility for a Summer gathering.

Dan & I visited "Starve Hollow SRA" (Vallonia, IN) today and were very impressed with the facility. It's near Brownstown, Indiana and is easy to find.

The park is nice and shady everywhere and the "water front" sites ( in the area of #1 through #13) are very nice. All of the "inland" sites are nice too.

The wierd thing is that the SRA is not shown on the Indiana State Park list on the DNR site.

Comments welcomed regarding the choice of a summer gathering.
Options are Starve Hollow (in July) and/or The Illinois Chapter gathering in August.

We could do both but let's hear your thoughts. Reservations will need to be made (6) months in advance to insure a group area so a decision is needed within a month.

This could make a nice place for a gathering if we decide to have one in July 2014.

Mark, it's shame they don't have a good map on the DNR site. The "reserve america" map is not very accurate.

The sites from #1- #13 along the water are really nice.

If this park is chosen it will be done in plenty of time to get good sites for the summer gathering.

Starve Hollow is a great park. The lake is only 15' at the deepest (if I remember correctly), and there's good fishing there. Lots of shade. I camped there pre-teardrop and slept in the truck bed.

The maps used to be on there I beleive DNR has been working on the website but it is taking a while to get it all back together.
Oh here it is in pdf.http://www.in.gov/dnr/forestry/files/fo ... onelec.pdf
