I have a new standy...

Postby 2bits » Wed Jan 01, 2014 11:02 pm

After camping in my teardrop a couple of times, I need something bigger... A teardrop is great but a 4 x 7 teardrop can get a little crampt!! So I have been looking for a cheap old standy like my Prowler that will last me through a couple of seasons until I get my Prowler remodel complete. I wish I hadn't have gutted it so soon, but you can start rebuilding until you teardown! My friend picked up two campers for $500 today and I saw the first little square one but hadn't seen the second one. He said he would let me have the little one for $200. I told him that I saw that the front skin had come loose and $200 was too rich for me and I was already a hundred miles east on the way to look at another camper (which I passed on) so I couldn't really commit. Well my friend was being pressured to commit, so I told him that sight unseen, I could do a hundred bucks for it and so he did it.

So I am the new owner of this Montgomery Ward, Meads Mfg, Riverside model camper. I think it is 9-10ft at the most. I only got it because it was so small. It is totally trashed inside and the front and rear are popped away like the whole thing collapsed. The ironic thing is that the roof, and even the roof vent on the inside look perfect as well as the walls. They look great. I looked underneath and what happened is that obviously there was a leak and the floor got soaked and the floor collapsed around the frame.... Since the front and rear roof had no where to go when it sank, they popped away from the framing which explains why the front and rear are buckled but the sides are perfect. This gives me hope...

At any, rate, I am still looking for a cheap Standy to get me through, and for a hundred bucks, the "Little Spit" gets added to the project pile!!!

I think you may have a problem. At least it's a fun problem..... I wish deals like this popped up here in Denver. I'd buy it just to harvest the skin and windows for my build, and still get $50 in scrap metal out of the frame.

Since the sides are actually almost perfect, I ma hoping to make something of this one, otherwise I need the door badly so that's woth a hundred right there and I can make a utility trailer out of the frame, but we'll see how it plays out once I get it home and cleaned out. I would really like to lift the entire body off the floor, replace the floor and the front and rear framing and it would all snap back into place and be a really straight camper.

Make that TWO new standys! My friend bought them both for $500 and didn't want the other one and after I saw how nice the interior was I could not say no so I took them both for $500. I don't have any interior pics since I saw it at night, but I can say that I think I will be camping in this 62-64 Shasta Astrodome very soon!! Build thread coming soon....

I was thinking the same thing Miriam. That and the space and patience to do it right.

Well, I picked up the Shasta for $300 and it has an awesome interior (for $300 that is), but I was able to get out of buying the little square one. I also bought a 1960's Kenskill in awesome condition that is now my main camper. I am about to complete the post for it in the General section so check it out... I will also be posting my recently completed Teardrop for sale too for under a grand, keep your eyes peeled.

Thanks for the reminder!

Here's a link to the 58 Kenskill (the nice one) http://www.tnttt.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=58564

And I am attaching some pics of the '63 Shasta. It's funny because they have a very similar floor plan...
