4-Day Weekender - Toddler bed!

Postby Kharn » Sun Nov 24, 2013 8:37 am

I just picked up my HF 4x8 frame kit yesterday, so its time to start my build thread.
My basic idea is a 5x9.5' stretched Weekender, but a few details still have to be ironed out that I'll need to have the frame assembled to ponder.

A few variations from the normal Weekender plan:
1) Full height galley hatch, but I haven't decided if it will extend past the frame and slope back to meet the bumper, or have the walls stop at the bumper and have a mostly-vertical hatch.
2) Extra forward storage, both stretching the walls forward and having the front wall vertical behind the tongue box instead of having the traditional Weekender gap
3) Pop-out 5k BTU AC at the front of the cabin.

Construction will be MDO plywood under paint (probably tan walls, white roof, white interior), prebuilt doors and probably way too much time and money invested in little things that do not matter. :BE

The name's from the holy grail of working stiffs, when you don't go in on Friday, and security isn't cleaning out your desk on Monday. :D

My goal is to be campable by St Patrick's Day 2014.

So what happened did it get done or did someone come by and pull you away from it.
If it went more then 4 days we do not mind. Just want something fun for you to camp in.

I started mine saying I would do it in 4 months, my wife said slow down and build it right and I so am coming up to a year. Hope to have the cross bow done buy early June. so I can register it and pull it around before taking it to the IRG.

There's no way I could get it built in four days (I don't like coffee that much :? ), the name refers to the four-day camping trips we're hoping to take with it. A little shift from the Weekender's origins, but with the extra cargo space I'm planning ("Over-packer" does not even begin to describe my wife's camping habits  ), it fits.

I haven't made much progress on it, waiting on my registration plate, still need to find replacement lock nuts and the steel to extend the tongue. Plus a friend's sheet metal brake is taking up a huge chunk of my garage, I'll need to use the trailer to take it back to him before I can get started on construction.

McMaster Carr for the lock nuts was the best I found.

Grainger is also a good place to get lock nuts if you have one near you.

I finally managed to send in the trailer registration after at least 3 calls to the DMV with questions. :?
Unfortunately I've been otherwise sidelined with other projects thanks to the usual rush before the holidays, but my dad gave me a Kreg jig and orbital sander for Christmas and he also found a free lawn tractor that I can have once he's finished repairing a few things on it, which also means I can't build above the trailer deck until I pick it up from him in 3-4 weeks. I'll have to see about putting a hitch on the back of the tractor for towing the TD around the yard, I won't dare to drive my truck over the septic field and test-camping in the driveway in full view of the neighbors might be a little too weird for my wife to accept. :chicken:

My 10mm lock nuts finally arrived from McMaster, and I picked up new 12 and 14mm ones at Tractor Supply (no need to order a box of 50 for those from McMaster), so we'll see if I can bundle up enough to assemble the frame in my unheated garage this weekend. :snow

Camping season is approaching, and I'm way behind schedule.

Ha, we've done almost as much of that camping as the 'proper' type. I've camped in my previous trucks' camper shells with the boys in our driveway more than once, and we've used our decks as extra guest bedrooms in the summer. Maybe why we don't see the neighbors over too often... :D

I tried to assemble the trailer frame, but found a new project instead: Insulating the garage door, the recent cold snap has made my garage unusable for the moment.

But I received my Maine license plate in the mail so I've made a little progress.
