Tardis Camper - Letting Our Geek Flag Fly

Postby Abaker50 » Fri Dec 05, 2014 11:58 pm

OK - DH & I discussed many lovely classic trailer designs. We have agreed upon a pretty simple design that looks like Dr Who's Time machine. That's pretty much how things go around here.

Anyway, it will be a 6' x 10' Foamie, built on an aluminum chassis & we're working on ways to make it sturdy, waterproof and collapsible. Should be interesting.

Here's my attempt at Sketchup. The Tardis details will be paint & automotive decals, rather than structural.

The chassis shown here is a snowmobile trailer, which is one of our possibilities.

After the 1st, we'll get the tow hitch for the Jeep, buy our chassis and get started. Wish us luck - we'll need it.

Gettin' my geek on,
Andrea

With a teardrop One shows it very often. With a Dr Who theme you will be very poplar!
If you plan on long trips you might want to radius or taper the back for easier towing.
PS, I think the smallest TD as Tartis'es because when you lie down in one is seams a lot bigger then on the outside.

Is it going to be bigger on the inside than on the outside?

I THINK I understand what you mean by that, but would love an example to be sure. It's probably a good idea.

DH & I are trying to come up with a workable compromise. I'm kind of a minimalist & like the smaller, more aerodynamic profiles. DH wants LOTS of room. He's 6'2" & a reluctant camper, so I need to compromise on that. I suppose it would be better to wind up with too much room than too little, in any case. But I'd still like to make it as easy to tow as possible.

I'm nervous about this. It's our first build & we appear to exploring some uncharted territory.

Needs more of those round things on the inside walls ;)

This is a shape that may allow a smother air flow and max room.

It is the roof and back shape that would allow air to flow over the trailer easier.
But some say a flat back does not hurt the mpgs that much. I just like the more round shape.
PS: The curves is not as hart as they look and add a lot of strength .

The shape doesn't matter much behind the tallest part of the roof, the front does matter a ton, that is the end that needs to be rounded, especially if you are building a tear wider than the car.

If it is rounded, it will look even less like a Tardis. :(

That's true & DH is dead-set against rounding it off, anyway.

He's waffling again, so we'll see.

I seriously considered a foamie, I'll be following your progress.

Good luck and have fun!

Wow a tardis would be awesome  I would enjoy seeing this built and even more camping next to you. i think there was a green one also if you wanted to be a little different. I guess as long as it seems bigger on the inside than it looks on the outside and it takes you to new and exciting places and to some of the old cherished one it could really be called a targis no matter what it looks like. But a traditional looking would be cool 8)

Here's an idea.... if you want it to look like the actual tardis why not make it as if the tardis is on its side like it's fallen over.
That way the tardis roof is more streamlined and you could make it more in proportion....just thinking
