Easy interior lights

Postby Gadget Man » Mon May 22, 2006 10:47 am

I was sitting in my rig the other day dreaming of it's maiden voyage this Memorial Day Weekend.
I have 3 separate 12 volt lights inside, 1 main dome light, and 2 reading lights, but all running off the battery.
But If I'm plugged in to 120 volt at the campground why waste 12 volt battery power ?
So I sat and thought of how to install a 120 volt interior light after the fact that the interior is all finshed?
But...I do have a 120 v outlet for the TV.
So I went to "The Evil Empire" Wal-Mart and bought a 12 foot Rope Light, for $7.95
I installed it around the ceiling inside the cabin.
Wow !!! It's great, it gives off just enough light to live with, but maybe not enought to read by, but then I'll go with the reading lights.
It sort of creates a certain "Mood" inside the cabin, If ya know what I mean, Wink-Wink...

The tension between what is good enough and what is beyond that creates the space for character to become our work.

I will have to look at those lights.Someone else mention them also ( a friend ).Maybe make up a 12V D.C. L.E.D. kind for the interior lighting ( I had intended on doing anyway ) for general lighting inside the Tear.

Yeah, rope lights ... I'm pretty sure WarPony has a pic in his album of some on the exterior. And I remember seeing a pic somewhere, using them on the ground around the tear or such, to make a little walkway lighting. I might use that, instead of porch lights.

Another light fixture ya might want to consider looking at will be in the outside lo voltage section of Lowes or H.D. take the fixture and cut the plug in adaptor off the cord end, wire in a switch on the positive side and connect it up,,, some of the little fixtures aint to bad,,,, and they include a 12v bulb

chipper

After purchasing this LED Candlestick light, I think I will eventually add LED's to my trailer. This is a flashlight and cost me 26.95 at a auction store.

South Penn RR, go to WalMart and find the small "hockey puck" LED's back in the sporting goods made by Sylvania. It's kind of a tap light gizzmo that works really well! It has a sticky backside but comes off really nice. I bought it to see if I wanted an LED on the ceiling of my trailer. It was after the fact that I had already built the trailer that I decided that I did want one!!!

If you have 120V at the campground, your convertor or charger will be providing the power to the battery (ie all the lights are now being supplied by the 120v anyway)

I never could see why people added two sets of lights..................

One thing I noted recently while camping in cold temps (40s) was that the lights inside the trailer actually gave off a nice amount of heat. Especially nice in the morning to jump back inside to have our coffee.

lights

Postby stbuch » Sat Jul 15, 2006 8:29 am

After much discussion, we decided that the best way to do the electrical in our TTT was not to! We mounted two power strips-one in the galley and one inside. We bring the extension cord through the galley floor and plug her up! We run A/C and everything on this with no problems at all. As to lights: we chose to use the "tap lights" that are battery operated and you can buy them anywhere for about $4. We mounted two of these inside and two in the galley. They give off GREAT light!

Hi Sherrie

There seemed to be no mention at all of any GFCI in your set up, if you have not got one, for safety reasons I would highley reccomend adding one in-line.

We have been using the tap lights too. We replaced the batteries last week after using them for about an hour each night for about three weeks. They have nice light and are easy on/off. Velcroed on they have never fallen off the walls. Great $4.00 light.
