Mother Neff State Park

Postby 2bits » Mon Nov 03, 2014 12:30 am

Since we have been getting excited about the Hill Country lately, I thought I would share something about a park South of D/FW that I stumbled across... We will need to take a visit to enjoy the new facilities sometime in 2015 I think!

In 2007 the Leon River flooded leaving much of Mother Neff under water. The damage was so severe, there was no overnight camping for 3 1/2 years.

After the flooding, funds were appropriated for repairs and new facilities, but with the Civilain Conservation Corps and Native American legacies intertwined with the park's history, large amounts of surveying and planning were needed to ensure those legacies remain intact.

On August 15 of this year, ground was finally broken for the new facilities. These improvements include new maintenance areas, roads, camping loop with new camping sites, restroom and bathhouse facilities, parking and a first ever for the park, a headquarters for the park at the new park entrance. The new park headquarters will also include a small museum area detailing the CCC heritage and Native American legacies, including the return of many artifacts currently cataloged in Austin.

If all goes according to plan, the new entrance and facilities will open to the public January 24, 2015.

69 miles door-to-door! That's too close to not go. Let's pick a date.

I want to see what a "full hoo up site" looks like.
I'll burn that bridge when I come to it.
