Fenders, drawers and Tongue box....oh my!

Postby Juli n Bill » Wed May 31, 2006 1:51 pm

We finally got around to putting some fenders on the Eggscape, we couldn't find any pre made fenders that were the shape we were looking for, so Bill fabricated his own in fiberglass. Image

we also installed a tongue box to hold the battery and the hitch wheel.

We finally got the drawers installed in the almost finished galley:

and I thought I'd throw in some pics of the inside cabinets:

We still need to finish the trim and poly the wood inside, finish the galley hatch and install the overhead lights and cut out the cat eye windows in the front of the tear. But none of those things stop us from enjoying our little camper, so who knows when it will be completely finished! :)

Thanks MadJack,
actually we finished the tear for camping in less than 6 weeks last summer and have been using it ever since. The first trip was 1200 miles from LA to Port Townsend Washington last august. We're just a little slow on the finishing touches. :D These photos were taken last weekend at the Morro Bay State Park.

Bill made the fenders by laying fiberglass on a wood mold he made, then using bondo (lots and lots of bondo) to fill in and make them smooth. Much sanding was involved. I then painted them to match our tow vehicle.

Those are really nice fenders. I like the cabinet work too...it's about the same color as mine, a light oak. However, I've avoided using any drawers so far. I'll just buy some Sterlite plastic boxes that fit inside the cabinets to hold stuff.

Everything looks great Juli! Those fenders turned out really nice! :applause: I have to make my own fenders as well, and I can only hope mine turn out half as nice as those!

Juli and Bill,

Your fenders look really great. With all these custom fenders it might be time for a "Fender Gallery". :D

A fender gallery? Not a bad idea. How about for now, a fender montage? (I've got too much time on my hands)

I'll ask, since no one else did.

Whats going on with the split windows ? Future upgrade ? ... or did something not work out as expected.

Juli N Bill....whose tool box is that? Got a brand name? I've been looking for a diamond plate tool box that I can fit a battery into that doesn't short out the teminals, everything I've found is too shallow for top mount terminals...please let me know...and everything you've done looks great...keep up the good work...doug

Noob, those are future cat eye windows, just haven't had time to put them in yet. But eventually we'll get to it. :)

Doug, it's a craftsman toolbox. We bought it at Home Depot, it was the last one they had and they didn't want to sell it to us because it was missing the handle.

Thanks to everyone for all the kind words, we're pretty proud of our incredible bed in an egg.

I hope you got a good discount for the missing handle. I've found out that if there is anything wrong with something, you can usually talk them into dropping the price at the contractor's desk. I needed some particle board, but not a full sheet and saw one with a damaged corner (less than 10% of the total sheet) and got a 40% discount off the price.
