A Canvas Roof?

Postby Witch » Fri Jun 02, 2006 1:30 am

In a previous thread, I saw:
Ed,

I'd say, go for it. Sounds like you have a solid plan. I'm thinking about the possibilty of a canvas roof coated with epoxy resin and paint on the next trailer I build. How's that for a light weight idea?

I got to thinking about where to get canvas-fabric store-and if exterior paint would work as an adhesive for the fabric to adhere to the wood? I'm not to fond of using epoxy resin because the cost is rather prohibative at this point, and I'm spending most of my money on flying.

If paint wouldn't work, are there any other options to adhereing canvas to wood?

Also, I'd like to keep the texture of the fabric. IOW, not having a smooth finish.

Canvas theoretically could be used on all sides and top (aircraft style ) canvas over a superlight frame .... Finish was usually aircraft lacquer, available at small airports ...
There’s no place like Foam !

Witch,

As for spending all your money on flying, geez, how much could a broom cost?

I've done the epoxy, and it turns out really good. I know what you mean about leaving the texture of the cloth and not filling it up with paint. I had a classic reproduction sailboat at one time and used a coarse weave fiberglass on the deck to simulate canvas, just didn't fill it up with resin or paint. I used a linear polyurethane paint on that project. Really easy to do your own research on this. Do a test sample before you jump in. I made one last weekend with a piece of canvas on a wood frame, the epoxy stuck it to the frame well and sealed the cloth. I painted it with white house paint. Why not use contact cement to hold the canvas onto the wood, then paint? Might be the most inexpensive way. If you need canvas in widths not available in the fabric store. Here is a source. Canvas Link I was thinking about a miniature version of a Vardo, keeping with the Tiny Travel Trailer idea.

For some ideas on using canvas, and waterproofing methods, pick up a copy of this:

I've been threatening to build one of these for years now, and have picked up most of the needed materials.

Helicopter.

I'm tired of being stuck in a dead-end low paying job with no hope for advancement, so I said WTF.

I've had a desire to fly helos for the last 20 or so years, and now, while I can't afford it, I've decided to be a helicopter pilot. Two hours down, 998 to go
:D

I found that canvas kayak book at the library. I'll have to get it tomorrow. Thanx

Because you told him - that's why. To be specific, your browser sends that information every time you request a page. Not only do us web geeks know your browser, ISP and IP address. We can tell your monitor resolution, whether you're on a broadband or dial-up connection. when you last visited the site, how much time you spent on the site, how many pages you viewed, when the last time you visited, which path you took through the site, etc., etc.

Companies like Yahoo and Google are extremely adept at tracking user's behavior and use that information to decide which ads to deliver to you.

The Internet is anything by anonymous. Everytime you go online you leave electronic footprints all over the place.

Just ask the Mass. State trooper who got arrested for solicitng sex from teenagers online last month. This guy thought he was meetng a 15 year-old boy for sex. Instead, he met FBI agents who busted him. The Feds knew exactly who he was and where he lived long before he got there.

/hijack

Yurts and gerns and a lot of Medieval re-enactors' pages later ...

BEFORE you put it on your frame, spread your canvas out in the floor of a DIY carwash bay and wash, then rinse, then spot-free rinse it. Now dry it in the sun on a (heavy duty!!) clothesline.

NOW get yourself a hand-pump pressure sprayer from eg lowe's or HD, and coat both sides of the canvas with Thompson's Water Seal. Let dry and recoat.

Presto: Lightweight flexible roof.

You want it REALLY lightweight, use two layers of silnylon instead (this would allow you to put insulation between.

Water seal on canvas? Does that really shed the water?

Hey, that gives me another idea.

Thanx Laredo

Do you think water seal might work on say, parachute nylon? Idea: Snag a T-30 parachute, coat with water seal, dry, and big lightweight tarp? Dang, I ought to work for NASA

Witch -- I dunno : nylon and TWS may not be compatible.
But Google for "silnylon" and see what you find.

I knew anyone could find out everything about my internet activity:

But that's not the reason that I only visit HETEROSEXUAL adult web sites where ALL models have signed releases stating that they're 18 or over.

Wait--I'll amend that. I also occasionally come across a "disgusting" lesbian [we can't use the word for a female gay person here? what's going on!?) site as well. And it just makes me so sick that I can't even LEAVE the page. I just stare at everything there for HOURS in disbelief that this kind of thing goes on nowadays.

Why, I have DOZENS of these sites marked as my favorites, just in case the authorities want to investigate this blasphemy further and need my help.

But regarding what Steve did, I had no idea it was so easy to automate the process like that.

Thank God I wasn't using WINDOWS! To me, that's a lot more embarrassing than being caught at a porn site!
