Hoosier Chapter at Lincoln State Park Spring 2016

Postby Kurt (Indiana) » Sun Oct 18, 2015 9:01 am

Dan and I took a road trip, which we love to do, to check a location for our spring gathering.

We visited Lincoln State Park (Lincoln City, IN) and found a great looking State Park. Everyone we have talked to about it has been highly complimentary of the park.

With this in mind, we have chosen Lincoln State Park as the location for our spring gathering.

Dates for the gathering will be announced shortly so that our (6 month advanced) reservations can be made starting in November (2015).

Reservations

Stay tuned!!

This is about 40 minutes from our house. It fills up fast in Spring. RESERVE EARLY!!!

Kurt, I just camped there Friday night with our Trail Life troop in the youth tent area. Agreed, it is an awesome Park.

Looking forward to it. It's a beautiful park...and it even has water at every site...makes it a lot easier when your not living on "water discipline" mode.

I'm sure the northerners will have a problem, it's a haul for them, but it's worth it. Keep in mind trips to Salamonie et al, is just as long for out southerners...a little turnabout is fair play.

Sounds like an extended weekend to me, maybe a kickoff for a week of vacation the week after...

DESCRIPTION Lincoln State Park

Discover the boyhood home of the 16th president of the United States, Abraham Lincoln. Among the rolling hills and thick forest, young Lincoln learned many life lessons. Lincoln State Park offers 10 miles of hiking trails, two scenic lakes, and an interpretive center to help you experience early life of settlers in southern Indiana. Your entire family can enjoy a relaxing time at one of the campgrounds, cabins or group cottages. Tour the Colonel Jones Home, the historic home of the merchant and Civil War officer who employed young Lincoln.

The 1,747-acre park was established in 1932 as a memorial to Lincoln's mother, Nancy Hanks. The Little Pigeon Creek Baptist Church and Cemetery, located on the property, is where Lincoln’s sister Sarah is buried.

The Civilian Conservation Corps, a national program designed to provide jobs for unemployed young men during the Great Depression, was instrumental in establishing the park’s recreational facilities. These include the CCC-built beautiful Lake Lincoln, Lakeside shelter, boat rental building (formerly a ranger cabin) and many trails.

Sarah Lincoln Woods Nature Preserve is located in the southernmost portion of the park. A visit to Lincoln State Park is like taking a step back in time to when the land was wild and Lincoln was a boy.

Bill, Good observation. The actual gathering is whenever you get here. The scheduled "events" are Friday and Saturday but you can come any time you want.

I guess that camp reservations are normally made for Friday and Saturday (with Sunday departure) but many people are coming in earlier lately.

I normally arrive on Wednesday and leave Sunday.

Some of us have a limited number of vacation
days available. Have to plan carefully how they
are scheduled and with who.

Bill, the schedule is flexible so come what ever days you can fit into your vacation.

I'm going down on (Tuesday) the 10th so I'll make my reservations tomorrow. (six months in advance)

In order to get a specific site you can reserve six months before the arrival date.
