Postby hartk1213 » Sun Feb 14, 2016 11:32 pm

Hello everyone,
i am Hartk1213 and i am 25y.o. and have been a member of this site for a little while and i have asked a few questions here and there but now i am finally starting to build my trailer
its going to be a Benroy i am using the Generic Benroy plans but mostly as a guideline for certain dimensions. this is my first build but i do have experience with woodworking as that is my main hobby
i am going to be building a 5 x 8 trailer and its going to be for my wife ,i and my dog Dory.
This is Dory shes a weirdo lol

to start off i couldnt decide on whether to use the Northern Tools trailer or have one welded up from scratch and after talking to some family friends who work at a fabrication shop i had them weld me up a 5x8 trailer that i designed my self it ended up being cheaper then the NT trailer anyway and alot stronger since welded and not bolted
here are two images of the designs i did in google sketchup

if any of you want to use those designs for a trailer you are more than welcome to

update #3
2-14-16

i dont have any pics of this but right before i picked up the trailer they attached temporary fenders and lights to the frame just so i could get it home the fenders were made of an old cut up big rig fuel tank lol
anyways on my way home i stopped by the local lumber yard and had them load me up with all the wood i would need for the floors, walls, ceiling and roof, as well as all the insulation for the walls. i still havent bought any wood for the hatch yet

after a trek over the mountains and back to my place i was finally able to get the trailer in my tiny single car garage and man is it a tight fit

next i placed the plywood down and i had to rip an extra foot off one of my two sheets i got for the floor since they are 4x8 and the trailer is 5x8...i really love my table saw

today i was able to get all the wall pieces cut out today , the outer 1/4" ply skin, the middle 1/2" ply as well as the 1/4" inner skin
and of course i had to see what it is going to look like so i clamped one of the walls to the trailer to see how it looks

at last for this update is i painted the roof tar coating on the bottom of the floor it was raining outside so i had to cram in my tiny garage to do it but no big deal i was able to finish it
dont mind the messy garage..thats what happens when i dont wanna stop working on a project to clean up around me lol...but it gets clean every sunday night when im done working..."a clean shop is a safe shop"

Looking at your pictures that back spring hanger dose not look right . It should have at lest 15% to the rear it may just be the picture

To get the best spring travel under load . You need to pre-load the spring hangers to move to the rear of the trailer 15 deg seam to be a good starting place . If there at a 90deg it very hard on the springs.

Update #6
2-28-16

This weekend I wasn't able to get a whole lot done but I was able to work a little on a trailer

First thing I did was get the wall drawn up and layed out and cut out the hole for the door.
Image

Next I cut out all the holes for the foam insulation
Image

Next I cut out and installed the insulation temporarily ..there are a few gaps but I am going to fill those with expanding foam to seal the gaps

Update #6 Continued
2-28-16

To continue on with my last post since there are only 3 pics allowed per post

I glued the inner skin to the inner ply wall as well as glued the insulation in..I don't have a great way to clamp it so I used whatever I could find that was heavy and then strapped it down for more clamping pressure
Image

While I waited for the glue to dry I mount this junction box in the tongue to connect all the trailer lights and charging circuit
Image

Picture of the inside... I really like this box but I wish that the mounting bolts also doubled as grounding bolts but they don't so I had to run my own ground to the trailer with an eyelet around the mounting bolt
