What do you pack?

Postby BILLYL » Thu Jun 15, 2006 11:23 am

The Moose is now offically "CAMPABLE" (photos coming) and we are taking it on it's maiden voyage this weekend. We are going to see how it works and make notes about how to finish the galley - etc. My question is - what tools would you suggest that I pack for a 400+ mile trip?

Also - has anyone a check-list

Thanks as always

Congratulations Billy
I would be sure to include some Duck tape and bailing wire. Seriously I keep them in my cars. Some fix-a-flat too. Add a pair of plier and a hammer you should be good to go.

How about some w2-40, multi-meter (one w/volt meter and ohm meter on it), needle noses with a section to strip wires.

I keep a small tool set in all my campers. I just buy one of those home repair tool sets. They have the usual Screw drivers, wrenches and hammer. I also put a small jar of assorted washers, screws, electrical connectors and nails in there. It has come in handy on many trips. Duct tape is your best friend too. Especially when you scrimp on your cord hatch and it goes from not staying closed to not staying attached.

In the tear I am going to keep this stuff in an ammo box that I use to support the rear jacks.

Guess I use a little different approach here, but I keep a small tool set in my tow vehicle at all times. It cantains everying I need to do any repair that is practical on the side of the road.

Lets see on our Maiden voyage I need some bungies to hold the hatch down, lug wrench to tighten the lug nuts (one fell off and was rolling around in my baby moon), drill with drill bits, and a jig saw to cut a hole for the A/C, aluminum vent and some screws to cover the hole.

When I took my "good enough" trailer to Minden last year, the most important things I brought on the first trip was:

1) A tarp big enough to cover the top, in case it rained.

2) A tube of silicone to seal any leaks.

3) Plenty of rope to tie the tarp down if I had to drive in the rain.

You can bring all the stuff you THINK you MIGHT need and you are still going to dream up some crazy scenario, while you are driving, where you might need..........bread ties, candle wax, that old garden hose you've saved for some reason............... It goes on and on.

You'll freak the whole time you are getting to where you are going. It's a great relief to get to camp. If it hasn't broken by the time you get there, chances are, it won't break.

We left our house and we got to a town about 60 miles away, to get the kid some lunch, as we were pulling thru the drive thru I could hear it every time I moved. I knew exactly what it was. I was going to check the lug nuts anyway, since these were new wheels (I usually check the lug nuts after about 30-60 miles). I have had them loosen but never come off all together.
