Thanks ELM. I'm sure I'll have some slow going as well. I have to be opportunistic with my free time, as I never know when I will get some. I'm hoping I can find someone local who can blast and powder coat my frame without breaking the bank once it is done.

Powder coat looks good but it's not all it's cracked up to be. I've been doing wrought iron fencing, railings and gates for 25 years and I've found that the powder coating is hard and brittle and chips easy. I prefer a good urethane paint. In the end I do what the customer wants. Just my 2 cents.

Patterns are a great way to save a lot of headaches. I found a little problem with the way I had the hatch designed. The bottom edge would not clear the radius of the side. In the pictures you can see the remedy. The small section I cut off lines up with the floor. Now the hatch clears fine. I hope this is the only major design problem I will encounter. I will glue the small section back in place and check it to the other outside pattern I finished earlier today.

A question for everyone:

When I had originally came up with this design, I had planned on skinning the whole thing in aluminum. Since I found 4x10 birch for the outside walls, it seems a shame to cover it up. So I plan on fiber glassing the whole thing with the roof skinned in alum. However, the problem is attaching the side walls. The plan was originally to screw through the sides into the floor. now with the sides exposed, is there a decent way to do this that will look decent. The side walls are only 1/4" thick. I was thinking pinning the walls to the floor with dowels. Would this be enough?

TIA,
David

Depending on the height of the screws relative to the bottom of the wall, you might be able to cover them with a strip of aluminum flashing or molding to make a drip edge. This will protect the end grain of your wall plywood as well as disguise your screws.

I've been plugging away slowly at it. The frame is out getting blasted and painted. I'm ready to cut my outside walls and trim the frames down to final dimmensions. Then it's time to build the floor and glue up the walls. 141981141982

Looks good!

I'm assuming that you are just test fitting the wall frames and plan on taking them back down to skin them. Be careful handling them at least until you get one skin on, it doesn't take much leverage to snap some of the more spindly joints at this stage.

KC,
I already broke one joint. It is sturdy until it has a twisting moment on it. It will be fine once skinned as you say. Hopefully by the end of next week I'll have the sides skinned and attatched.

The side frames being attatched to the outside skin:

The next step is removing the floor from the trailer and sealing it with CPES. Then it goes back on the trailer for the last time. Then it is off to mounting the sidewalls and running wiring.

Been busy this week. Took a break back in OCT. I now have the sides on, half the wiring done, and soon will take it to have blown in insulation done.147428147429147430147431147432147433147434 After that, I'll put on the roof skin and fiberglass it, and begin the hatch construction.

I'm surprised that you aren't planning to do the hatch before blowing insulation. Won't it be the same type of construction as the roof?

KC,
The hatch is going to be an open framework, therefore no insulation. The dividing walls between cabin and gally are insulated.
