New Design I am working on

Postby PaulLGCal » Thu Sep 01, 2016 7:06 pm

Hi, I have been thinking about a number of ideas for my Teardrop. While I may still build a fairly standard Teardrop design, I am intrigued by making my own design. I like to take on challenges. Here is a rough Sketch Up design that I laid out to visualize my design. I would welcome some thoughts about the shape. My biggest concern is the possibility of strange wind issues with the downward sloping front. I am open to any criticism that the forum has. This is just a concept at this point and I am still in the thinking stage.

I designed this to go onto NT 5x8 frame.

Thanks, Paul

You're right. I did not intent to build a convertible boat tear drop but my design does have many similarities. I dropped it onto the NT Trailer model below.

You're right to worry about the shape of the front. At highways speeds, this might create a lot of lift, pulling the tongue upwards. Depending on your tow vehicle, you may be able to get away with it if it's big enough because of the turbulence between the TV and TD. Another quick fix would be to move the axle back a bit to put more weight on the tongue if you don't feel like changing the shape.

I don't think the front design will cause any issues since it will be within the turbulent wake of the tow vehicle. It doesn't have much downward sloping frontal area than the Grumman or Cub/Modernaire designs or their variants. I haven't heard any anecdotal reports of these designs.

I doubt it'll cause an issue with wind.

What are you going to cover this with? It'd be a problem to sheath it with aluminum. I suspect there's a way, but it would be a head scratcher.

Also... you're losing perhaps 20" to 24" of interior room with those angles. That's a lot of space to lose.

Your kitchen area looks really deep. how far do you have to reach in? Besides that, the shape is really swoopy!

I appreciate the input from various people on this. It is great to hear from the experienced individuals on this forum. I have been working on a couple of modifications and revisions to this design based on the input. Will post another picture before too long.
