I found time for a little snow day project for the land lady...... I found these little curio racks at Goodwill for a buddy and he turned up his nose at them for a display rack so I offered them to her and this is the result........

I HAD A TRESPASSER OVER THE WEEKEND AT THE CABOOSE.

From the hoof prints I think it was Rudolph. If I were able to open the garden window enough I think I could have patted him on the butt. It was kind of neat to see deer tracks In the snow. I wish I had caught a glimps of him !

Well made it to another year ! Took a short side trip this morning and went and investigated a 8 x 20 cargo shipping container. The tare weight of 4800 pounds kinda scared me at 1st but then I realized the caboose has probably blossomed to over 5k so that helped to put it into prospective. I am thinking strongly about a fireproof utility building for the monster wood stove and a water storage building. It is less than 2 miles from the caboose so I have got to make a call this evening and find out a price. It was pristine inside and out so it is probably not what I am looking for ! $$$$$ I like cheap!

Holy Moly it damn near May. I spent this weekend cutting and cleaning up 6 downed trees and mowed and trimmed the caboose grounds. Built the land lady a dog house for the monsters

Image

and assembled a 10 x 10 wire kennel for their "day park" and a OK corral for the house.Image

The tree cutting crew and I had our very first dinner at the robin hood table. Image

It felt good getting the trash and dead fall limbs all raked up and burnt. The campfire went a full 36 hours with all the tops and trash we burnt.

Well the caboose now has a chicken house.......

Image

Well it is a joint venture between the land lady and myself.

She was going to purchase one of those cute little $985.00 chicken houses https://www.ruralking.com/large-chicken-coop.html

I offered to build one.

Total expense was 4 sheets of plywood about $78.00 the rest was scrap and crap from work and salvaged items.

Yes the roof is a 10 foot old school satellite dish ! The windows were from a 2 sided hanging cabinet I cut off the box and used the glass doors. The grill guards were the shelves out of my dead fridge I sent with a scrapper a few months back. The egg doors were from the cabinet remodel leftovers I did for my mom a year and a half ago. The lumber was all salvage from work with the exception of the 4 sheets of plywood mentioned earlier. There are about a dozen pics in my album if you are interested.

  • Not everyone has your handyman ability (though I have my moments). Nor does everyone have your great collection of scrap materials to choose from (mine has its' moments, too). So, I would have trouble, and a larger expenditure than your $78 out-of-pocket, to duplicate your chicken coop. It looks like what I would need for mine to be: large, totally enclosed, and off the ground. Are the chickens going to be free-range or is there a fenced area to confine that ranging?
  • Both of our next-door neighbors have chickens. One just lets them roam the neighborhood, prey to the local hawk, feral cats, and his junkyard dogs. The other neighbor just started his own chicken endeavor, with a store-bought coop, on a cleared area next to his house, behind a tall stockade fence. So far, he hasn't lost any to the hawk, nor the cats, nor the local coyote population. My wife wants some chickens, too, especially since her niece raises dozens at her family ranch-compound, an hour from us. I don't object, but we have a snake problem in our yard, in addition to the hawk, cats, neighbors dogs, and coyotes. The coop would have to go into one of two areas, both semi-swampy, where snakes are often seen, and I'm sure that chickens there, would attract even more. Copperheads, cottonmouths, but no "good snakes".
  • Every time we go to Home Depot, she points out a $200 Chicken coop kit, that would be fine to use, except for the wildlife problems listed above (my eight dogs are confined to our adjacent main yard, and house, so they can neither cause a problem, nor defend the chickens against a threat). Your elevated chicken coop on tall legs would be better than the store-bought coop for my wife's use, so I'm envious of it. She's going to buy it, this summer, so I'll have to address the "security" problems as best I can.
