5x8 TCS Big Woody Build

Postby cmoconnell » Mon Dec 05, 2016 7:46 pm

[img]Hey everyone! I'm going to attempt a build journal of my teardrop to specs I could not find. The idea is a 5x8 TSC trailer (carry-on frame) with a Big Woody basic wood components with the premium package. I am a local firefighter with a schedule of 48 on and 96 off. So I hope the build takes off really soon and allows ample time to complete my goal of completion by June 1, 2017.Three days ago I started with a factory TSC Carry-on trailer 5X8 mesh bottom. I was able to cut off the rear tailgate/ramp and grinded down the edges in about an hour. I sprayed the bare metal with paint to avoid rust. Following my shift, (today) I spent about 3 more hours removing the side rails via saws-al, cutting wheel and a grinder. I then again sprayed the bare metal with paint.

Congrats on the start! Working that schedule should offer you ample time to build a great teardrop. It's like have 2 weekends a week.

Thanks Jonb8. Its been cold outside so I haven't spent too much time on the build the last two days, but I did manage to get a few things done. Yesterday I purchased some plywood and OSB for the deck base. Today, I was able to put down my first coat of herculiner on the deck base. I hope the temperature isn't so cold that it will effect the product.... its about 25 degrees here and Im doing the work in a carport... thanks everyone and take care!

Be Careful where you use OSB. It wicks up water like a sponge and turns to oatmeal.

Copy. The OSB will be above the herculined deck base and inset 3/4" on each side. Additionally it will not be exposed to the weather and will have other flooring on top.

I'm wondering if its important to run the electrical in the floor like the plans suggest or if I can put it off for a couple weeks and install it into the ceiling...? any thoughts/suggestions?

I know I should have a better reason as to why I place the electrical in the ceiling VS the floor but for now, I just want to get the project moving along and get the decking on the "done" list..

Thanks guys and cheers!

I guess it all depends on the complexity of your build, what features you want to include, and how "finished" you want the end product to be. I can tell you that on my build I wished that I had spent a little more time earlier, and allowed a little more pull space for my wire routing. I have a fairly simple system with mostly just a good compliment of LED lighting and a couple of fans, but they are all on separate circuits; so it adds up to quite a bundle of wiring.

If you do decided to route thru the ceiling (or even the floor) make sure you drill your pass thru holes before skinning, otherwise, even with a 90 deg drill, it may be hard to drill the holes straight thru.

I used surface mount wire organizers/chases along the baseboards of my walls (tucked down beside the mattress) so that I can have better access for maintenance and/or modifications, but still ran some wires thru the roof and bulkhead.

The worst thing you can do, IMO, is to get in such a hurry that you make more work, or worse, rework for yourself because you got in a hurry. Just speaking plainly here with no malice intended: If that kind of thing doesn't bother you and your build is going to be pretty simple, then no big deal. Some people can organize a simple build in their head well enough and crank one out in no time. Me, I have to plan and sort out details before I start otherwise I can't get there. Just saying.

Definitely listen to this. I did not skin yet but installed most of my spars....then I tried to route my wire and realized my drill wasn't gonna cut it. Even with a 90 degree add on it was a PITA.

well got back to work on the TD again today. I started with another coat of bedliner on the deck bottoms. I think it's well coated and will keep the moisture of the road out with no problem. Next, I rewired the trailer since I had to make some electrical cuts during the tear-down of trailer. Finally once the deck (mostly) dry, I placed 1/8 aluminum shims on the low spots of the trailer with silicone. I then applied a generous amount of silicone on the frame and laid the deck onto the frame. Tomorrow I'll work on framing the deck and installing electrical and insulation before I secure my top to the deck.
