35 south, looking for ideas

Postby PKCSPT » Wed Dec 14, 2016 10:54 pm

Pat is retiring next summer and we are planning a trip down Interstate 35, this is how he wants to start his retirement. When I was planning a trip to southern California you were a great help so I ask again.
For several years now I have wanted to drive 35 to the end in Texas, only reason is the other end us in Duluth Minnesota where we go a lot. We both want to go to Texas to see Dealy, plaza and the Alamo. Pat is always studying JFK, and the Alamo.

Any must see attractions on our way? We will be stopping in Midwest City Oklahoma to visit some family and I want to stop where route 66 and 35 cross.
Planning on 10 to 14 days, probably in June. We are not taking the teardrop, remember he does not like camping. We would like to find something to see on the way down and on the way back.

Suggestion?

Spend some time in Oklahoma City. Check out the National Memorial to the OKC bombing and get a steak at Toby Keith's in Bricktown. They have a neat little shuttle system that will get you around most of the city fairly inexpensively.

 Ditto on the OK city memorial museum, showing the before and after sites of the bombing. You will remember it forever. Enjoy

Just outside of Edmond Oklahoma there is Pops Stop and it is right on Route 66. Pretty popular spot for people to stop and take a picture next to the big neon pop bottle.

Sounds good,, should see the OK bombing site. Pops Stop sounds perfect on Route 66.

Construction on I-35 from Waco south to Georgetown. Expect heavy traffic going thru downtown Austin. Rush hours are a bear. Other times are bearable, but slow. Bear to the right to take the elevated part across downtown for a better view while you're sitting there.

Where'd all those bears come from?

McKinney Falls SP for a nice campsite close to Austin to drop the trailer and explore the capital.

Buckee's for cheap gas, expensive food, clean restrooms. Temple's has about a hunnert gas pumps.

Wave as you go thru Round Rock.

Also if you liked BBQ Smokin Joe's is really good. There was an article out not long ago that ranked it in the top 3 places to eat BBQ in Oklahoma, About a half mile off I-35.

Start looking at the attractions along I35 in Minnesota:
Jay Cook State Park
Moose Lake State Park fantastic agate display
Pine City: NW Company Fur Post, it is unique
Way too many things in the Cities
Side trip off I35 to Austin: Spam museum
Clear Lake, Iowa: Surf Ballroom and other Buddy Holly sites
Way too many things in Kansas City

Any stop will be correct. You may not return or recommend. Enjoy the trip.

I little off I35 in Nebraska is the Strategic Air Command museum. I thought it was nice. They have blackbird to a bomber that when it toke off it had 6 turning and 4 burning.

It is not camping. Is a road trip with sleep overs at Walmart?

As you come through Kansas City, There are quite a few things to gather your attention. Union Station, The plaza, The Negro league Baseball museum, The WWI memorial and museum, The Nelson Atkins Museum of Art and the Toy and Miniature museum are all pretty close together as is Boulevard Brewing (beer) and The Roastery (coffee). There is also the Steamboat Arabia museum at the River Market (farmer's market and other vendors). Also, farther south on the Kansas side there are Deanna Rose Farmstead and the Overland Park Arboretum. Oh, and many different Kansas city BBQ restaurants.

I forgot to mention the Inner Space Caverns, just off I-35 on the south side of Georgetown, TX. Constant 75deg at 98% humidity. You'll like it, if you like that sort of thing. :?

Thanks to everyone for the tips. I'll be taking I-35 going north from Round Rock to Minneapolis, starting next week. I'll report on anything else interesting, if there's anything interesting to report. :D
I'll burn that bridge when I come to it.
