How to remove mould from plywood before staining

Postby edgeau » Thu Jan 05, 2017 2:43 am

Hi all. I bought 12mm marine ply for my walls before Xmas. But did not stain / treat it immediately. It has now got some mould growing on it. I tried some fine sand paper but that has not removed it. Any ideas how to get rid of it before I stain and seal?

Maybe bleach or oxalic acid?

When building my folks log house we used a solution of 50/50 bleach and water to remove it from the logs before staining. It should work on the plywood but haven't ever tried it on plywood before though.

Maybe TSP (tri-sodium phosphate)? This and/or bleach will kill the mold, and might whiten the wood in the treated area slightly, but may also not completely remove the darker colored remains.

Most of the remedies I've seen go to bleach and detergent and scrubbing, and all recommend proper protection - goggles, gloves, at least a dust mask. Here is one that is very appropriate, dealing with stored material: http://www.ehow.com/how_6541524_removin ... ywood.html

Thanks all. The diluted bleach, a scrubbing brush and more sanding did the trick. For some reason after the bleach the surface was really rough hence more sanding which also got the remaining stain out.
