Memory foam mattress 6" or 8" please give me your opinions.

Postby TallyTear » Mon Feb 13, 2017 5:05 pm

I am sure there are tons of threads on this. I didn't have much luck finding them. I was planning one 6" memory but then started second guessing maybe I should go 8".

I think it is the density that matters

Physical demensions of the trailer matter also. What height works best with the door opening for TD's, are you going to make a fold up bed in CT's and so forth.

Depends #1 what works in your trailer. My wife spent hours researching foamies for our camping and everyone said denser is better. We got a 3in thick one for on top of an air matress and its so stiff its uncomefortable for me. If it is right on the floor and you kneel all your weight on it your knees arent on the floor. Its like sleeping on a board.
So it depends if you like stiff matresses or soft.

We use the 4" memory foam and it is a good compromise for head room and comfort. It does bottom out when you are on all fours but provides good support when you stretch out. Ours is 1.5" of memory foam and 2.5" of regular firm foam. We found that we like the regular firm foam on top better. I tend to move a lot when I sleep and it was hard to get out of those holes you create in the memory foam when you roll from side to side to back. Also, the memory foam gets really hard when it gets cold.

Most memory foam mattresses are not 100% memory foam. The top layer - 2" or so - is memory foam and the remainder of the mattress is another type of foam. The 6" mattress may be equal in comfort to the 8" if both have the same thickness of memory foam.

Glad to hear you're not scrimping on the one-teardrop item that needs to be top-of-the line. Isn't a bed on wheels why we love these things?

I don't think you'd want 8" of straight memory foam.

We have a mattress from the foam factory that is 5" of a high density foam with 2" of memory foam on top. It's superb.

Tony

if one won't do, try two

I like a firm mattress...seems to help my back, compared to too soft. We had a Tempurpedic mattress at home for years; my wife loved it, but I did not (I put plywood under my side to try to firm it up). So, when I built the trailer, I tried out various twin mattresses at Ikea, and liked the firmness of this one:

IKEA Sultan Florvag Foam Mattress

It was just fine for me, but when my wife finally expressed interest in using it (a year later- though she never did actually use it), I bought another to stack on top. I wrapped both in plastic protectors and the bedding fit two as good as one. I have to admit, two is better than one, since I can't bump thru to the floor, now. Another benefit is that two smaller mattresses are easier to insert in, or remove from the door of the trailer.

We use this 5" : https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NX ... UTF8&psc=1
My shoulder will go down to the floor after a while, so I'm going to get a mattress topper to thicken it up a little. If you're not a big guy, or a side sleeper, you'll be ok.
Other than that, it is more comfortable than the much more $$ mattress in my house.

I had 4 inch memory foam topper, and it wasn't thick enough, I put 2 inches on top, now it works fine.

We have a 5" firm foam, not memory, ans 4" would have been just fine.

Greeting Y'all,
A friend of ours found out I was going to build a camper and needed to make mattresses or two bunks. He said he had a free answer to our question. He showed up and we unloaded a king size Temper Pedic that measures 10 inches thick. We will get the electric bread knife out and have custom bunk mattresses a la Temper Pedic......... 8)
Have fun,
