Cold Brewed coffee

Postby Cosmo » Fri Mar 03, 2017 10:27 pm

Has anyone tried this who can provide feedback? I have not but I plan to once I collect enough positive feedback. Supposed to be low acid and sweet flavor (60% to 65% less acid due to no heat). Maybe a fuel saver too.

Thanks in advance

It is awesome way to make cold brew. I do a quart mason jar at a time.

I am not sure about this exact one but I do cold brew a lot. I use a pitcher from bed bath and beyond and have my local coffee shop grind it for me. Well used to at least now I have my own grinder.

It is much smoother. Additionally you can contact a local roaster and tell them what you are looking for low acid and they can recommend a specific region or style of coffee that will fit your needs.

I love cold brewed coffee.

I was having issues with the acidity of regular hot brew coffee. I found a few places that sold low acid or even zero acid coffee but they varied from being expensive to being ridiculously exorbitantly expensive. Then I found cold brewed coffee at my local Starbucks. I liked the taste. I messed around with a few low cost home brew methods, like bags or soaking and trying to filter through paper filters. They all seemed to be messy and a lot of bother. Bags are difficult to wash out thoroughly. Since organic matter is trapped in the cloth and about impossible to wash out there is always the possibility of mold forming. This is not mentioned in most of the online cold brew sites. Some people refrigerate or freeze the filter material between uses. Or replace it often.

I bought an OXO cold brewer off Amazon; $50. It uses a very fine S/S screen mesh. That is the achilles heel. You do need very coarse grind coffee or it will not run through. I had problems with that. I found coffee grinders in stores vary, producing different results between different machines on the same grind setting. That was frustrating. By this time I was really hooked on cold brew. I did find that my Starbucks had a very usable coarse grind that was consistent enough. With Starbucks though, I had to buy their coffee and there are others I prefer; just as good and cheaper.

So I bit the bullet and took a chance on a baratza coffee grinder. Not cheap even on Amazon. $250 It works wonderfully and I use the coarsest setting. My only real complaint is that grinding produces static electricity and coffee particles end up sticking to the plastic receptacle making a mess all over. My solution to that has been to grind in the workshop. I do a couple pounds at a time and clean up with the shop vac.

I make about 32 ounces of concentrate at a time and store it in the fridge. I use a second quart container to store the diluted ready to drink coffee. Works for me.

When we go camping I take a bottle or two of concentrate along.

Excellent Thank you for the feedback.
I am learning much more about cold brewing.
Of course the taste is everything and that I will have to experience for myself. Not sure if I will miss the acid but I am pretty sure I will be glad to see it go.

These seem to be the more popular type of brewers. Glass will take some careful packing in the trailer.

I saw those. My main reservation about them is that the coffee holder insert takes up a lot of space. The container is a 1 liter but you probably end up with a little more than half that can be used. Just a guess based on my experiments using jars, etc. The grounds absorb and retain a lot of water too. Those smaller ones seem to be better at making a drinkable cup rather than a concentrate, according to some of the reviewers.

The brew process takes 20 to 24 hours so you need a lot of planning ahead with a small unit. My OXO unit makes good concentrate that I can then dilute, 1 part concentrate to 3 parts water. Others may like more or less dilution.

Be aware that freshly ground coffee gives off CO2 and as a result the grounds want to float. I stir my brewer after the coffee has been in the water an hour or so to get the grounds all under the surface.

If you are not sure you will like cold brew check to see if you Starbucks does cold brew. Most around here do.

I use 300 grams of coffee and 5 1/2 cups water and end up with about 32 ounces of concentrate after 24 hours.

Thanks Don! I am going to check a store bought cold brew. The brewing at home in advance sounds good.

I like the French Press idea. It can do double duty as a hot or cold brewer (maybe hot winter cold summer).

THANKS!

French Press; probably if you leave it sit in there for hours and hours. A little limited capacity though, wouldn't you think? Worth a try, I guess, especially if you already have the press.

You do have a point Don.But what it lacks in capacity it makes up for in mobility. Plus you will be doubling whatever comes out of the press. But if you're looking to buy one I recommend a stainless steel over glass. (The steel makes it easier when traveling. )

I only drink cold brew. Even during the winter. The taste is so much more full and smooth. That said when I first learned of the cold brew process I started using my stainless French Press to make it. I add the freshly ground coffee and water to the press pitcher portion and put in the fridge overnight. In the morning it presses easily and my coffee is ready. I did experiment a bit and discovered I like my coffee best (dark espresso roast) after it's steeped for 12 hours. So I usually refill it before I make dinner and it's good to go in the morning. The only downside is you don't get that fresh brewed smell the next morning but (for me) it's worth the tradeoff for a better tasting cup of coffee.

I've read you can make a big batch and refrigerate for up to 2 weeks or so but I make one fresh cup each night for the next day.

One coffee roast it serve it place in SanDiego has a cold brewed coffee. One pound coffee one gallon of water 24 hours, kind of like sun tea. VERY high caffeine but smooth and non acidic.

Re: Cold Brewed coffee

I gave a store bought cold brew a try. I was pretty surprised to see the huge amount of choices in the cold brew section. I settled on a plain black coffee cold brew – I passed on the dozens of flavored, including added cream and sugar. I also passed on the Nitro brew which has nitrogen injected, despite the marketing claims (I don’t put nitrogen in my trailer tires so I saw no benefit from putting nitrogen in myself).

I was a lifelong coffee drinker since I was a child. About a decade ago my coffee habit became excessive so I endured a month long headache to kick the habit. I used green tea to help get the monkey off my back. Once I was "clean" I did eventually replace coffee with green tea.

I found the caffeine buzz from green tea did not jangle my nerves as much as hot brewed coffee. I must be sensitive to some compound in hot brew coffee that makes me more jittery than an equivalent amount of green tea. I found the same to be true with cold brew coffee – a less jangled caffeine experience (based on one cup, more research is needed).

I agree with the prior posts. The cold brew coffee was less acrid than hot brew. To me the flavor falls between tea and hot brew coffee. It tasted slightly sweet (I added no sugar or cream). It was pretty refreshing and I could indeed taste many more flavors in the coffee without the acids to mask them.

It’s not for everyone and there is the lack of "on demand" brewing, lack of a hot drink etc. I have something new to experiment with.

Thanks for the information
