Converting Cargo Trailers into TTTs

MY 5x8 TIN-TENT BUILD

Postby onehoser » Tue Feb 28, 2017 2:35 pm

so i went out and bought a 5x8 v-nosed cargo trailer with the intent of converting it to a camper. the plan is to be able to use it as a camper that can be easily stripped out and used for hauling materials and for storing all of our camping gear. i'm going to keep the build fairly simple and so far have a roof vent, 2 side slider windows, an rv door latch, a full width bunk that folds up out of the way, insulation and wiring for lights.
we used it all of last season and pretty much have the interior tweaked to the way we like it so it's ready for paint once the weather warms up enough.

thanks folks!
we have a large dining tent that makes up for the lack of elbow room in the tin-tent because we had to trade off cubic footage for towability. the trailer's dry weight is 700lbs with 100lb tongue weight and tows very well behind my tj, in fact it stabilizes the heep very nicely at highway speeds, kind of like flights on an arrow i guess. more later....

some of the items i've collected for the build so far:

-40 watt 12v solar panel
-1,400 watt booster pack with 12v, usb and 115v receptacles
-led strip lighting with remote control
-stability jacks so i don't have to mess with jack stands
-rv latch for the barn door
-solar powered led exterior motion lights
-boat cleats (for tarp)

wish list:

-power vent
-window for door
-teardrop door for the barn door

it finally got warm enough out so i painted the interior, got most of the trim back in and started to reassemple the bunks which i decided not to paint them because i liked the smell of the cedar and it was less work too, lol. i still have to panel and paint the ceiling, install the strip lighting, solder the factory wire connections (i don't trust those tap-in connectors) etc. will post up as work progresses.

i've been busy getting the jeep ready for our first trail run of the year next month but i did manage to get the stab jacks installed yesterday, better than messing with jack stands

Looks good.

Curious though, how you are going to do an RV latch on the two barn doors? I picked up a latch when I bought my trailer, but have decided no holes in my outer skin until I camp with it a bit. I will maybe install my latch on my side door.

my trailer has a single barn door with no side door so i bought an rv latch but haven't installed it yet. i still need to insulate the door so i will need to remove it to open it up, that's when i'll install the latch, right now that's low on the priority list, the citical path is to have it ready enough for camping in 5 weeks :)

That makes sense. I did not notice a single barn door, only no side door. A single barn seems a bit more unique. There is not a lot out there on the web or diagrams for doing a latch from scratch. The through hole of the assembly is straight forward, but my dealer cautioned me about getting the left to right for the bolt correct. Problem is that I do not have an install to look at to understand or measure. I am very handy, but this thing has me a bit spooked.

I am in the same boat. Doing just enough to be ready shortly, before breaking out the jig saw to mutilate my outer skin. Just placed my final order with sailrite, to complete my awning project. Getting things down to mostly accessory stuff for now.

that's why i'm going to take my time with the rv latch. i have no idea what the framework under the skin of the barn door looks like so i figure it's better to take it off, set it up on some saw horses and strip it down. there's no big rush since we have a slide bolt on the inside which in case of an emergency can be easily pulled open.
