Modern Benroy

Postby rkanz » Wed Mar 29, 2017 8:30 am

I started a lightweight version of a Benroy. I am using a NT aluminum trailer. Sides are 12mm marine ply, roof is 1/4" and 1/8" Baltic birch, framing is vg fir and alder. Floor is a torsion box with 1/4" birch top and bottom with 3/4" birch ply ripped to 1" for the stringers. Insulated with Pink Panther foam. Everything is glued with West System epoxy.
I am trying to keep the weight under 500 pounds.

Added interior shelves. I don't have a need for doors, want to keep the interior open, and want to save weight. There is a center console/shelf support for electronics. The front is removable. I drilled holes for USB and 12v outlets.Image

I finished my hatch props, overly complicated but simple. The sticks have a 30 degree angle at the bottom the locks into an angle at the bottom of the holder. Drilled for a pin to prevent lift.ImageImage

I glassed the top with 4 ounce cloth and West System Epoxy. I rolled and brushed 3 coats of Rustoleum boat paint. The sides were sealed with epoxy then 4 coats of marine varnish.Image

I sprayed 3 coats of varnish on the galley, and layed down laminate. I have a 35 ah a battery, Blue Sea fuse box, and Grape solar controller. Image

Bought radial tires and wheels and fenders. Fenders have two coats of bed liner on the inside, and many coats of Rustoleum enamel I sprayed with a gun. Image

The trailer is almost done. Just a few finishing touches. Each wheel weighs 270 pounds on a bath scale. It tows well behind my Honda Accord.

Nice job! Does your fiberglass cloth on the top overlap your sides? If so how did you get such a clean line?

I used a 3/8" radius round over bit on the edge. I let the cloth hang over the edge and applied the epoxy. When the epoxy started to harden I trimmed the cloth with a razor blade. When dry I sanded the edge of the cloth and applied more epoxy to smooth the edge. The paint wraps over the corners to cover screw holes that attach the stringers. I used 3M vinyl tape for a clean paint line.

We took the trailer on a shake down cruise. Really happy with the way it towed. I averaged 30 mpg behind an Accord. I have a 50 watt Grape solar panel wired to a 35 ah battery running LED lights and a 10 speed Maxxair fan. The fan only draws .2 amps on the low settings. Image

I wasn't happy with the door locks so I added a strike plate.
Image

Really happy with my water system. Stainless steel bowl with a through-hull fitting for the drain, stubbed to a hose fitting on the drain. Reliance 4 gallon water tank, silicon hose, Whale pump, Whale faucet. The pump is self priming and has lots of pressure and volume.

I added a Bluetooth stereo to the inside of the tear. I ordered a Dayton Bluetooth amp board and 3" speakers from Parts Express. Built 2 speaker boxes and used brass plate to hold the volume control, aux in, and leds. The sound is really good.ImageImage
