Another "Help me ID this pan"

Postby Bill n Robi » Sun Apr 15, 2018 11:12 am

Helped an elderly neighbor clean out a shed that needed to be demolished. Stacking up stuff to take to the recycler or dump, came across this pan. Asked her if she wanted to save it, "Nope", "well then Mona, yesterday was my birthday and I didn't get anything and this can be my payment to help and my BD present". Should have take a picture before I cleaned but I was so excited. I actually thought it was going to be unusable.

Trying to find info but can't ID it. Lettering and the drop shape on the bottom of the handle suggests Wagner but no stove ring suggest a Chicken Fryer" but those have straight sides. It is going to be my main home pan now so not important, just my curiosity...

Knowing nothing about old cast iron skillets, but using Google, it does appear to be a pre mid 60's Wagner. I didn't find anything about the Roman "I" as to what it might refer too.

I know I have a Lodge which has taken forever to get seasoned right. I found that wiping it with EVOO and storing it in the oven, then forgetting it is in there when I p[reheat the oven to 425 for frozen pizza, after a few cycles of that it is perfect!

PS: I gave away my Great Grandmothers well seasoned Griswold before I knew what it was worth.

The "New Times Roman" font does suggest that and "I" is mold number but the lack of a "stove Ring" the weird part. I can not find any reference to that except "chicken fryers" have flat bottoms but the sides are vertical not sloped.

Best part is it will work on my new glass/ceramic top stove and my older number 8 goes to the TD permanently.

There were a few on eBay, crusty, but no ring.
