Trailer security

Postby the3beers » Mon Jul 10, 2006 4:35 pm

okay me and my best friend are probably going over board but I like our system:
Image
this is a pict of a finished trailer anchor basically is just a 4 foot steel 2x2 with a 2inch ball welded to it and set into concrete
Image
this is the one for my silver shadow it should be close to level with its hooked up.

and this is my secondary form of security.

I think that's a great idea! Goin' NOwhere. Now, just peen the threads on the bolts that hold the hitch to the tongue, so the crooks won't just leave you with a hitch on your ball, and you're all set.
If you ever want to get the hitch off the tongue, though, you'll need a grinder.

the ball is tack welded to the nut so you will need a grinder to get it off. while that dog is barking in your ear not to mention the motion lights

Sorry, didn't mean the ball. I meant the two bolts that hold the coupler to the tongue. Take the nuts of those two bolts and the trailer is free.

I am more concerned with leaving my teardrop unattended at a park or campground than in my back yard.
Any ideas about that?

I have one of those long padlocks that slips through the hitch when it's closed. I usually close the hitch empty and slip the lock through. This also prevents loosing or misplacing the padlock. I know others have used those heavy duty bike lock cables through the spokes of the wheels.

haaa... true i will have to get the welder out again and tack weld the the tongue bolts.. not really a bad neighborhood just an ally and even in a good neighborhood things do happen. as for in camp you could make just run a large chain thru the spokes in the wheel and up around the tongue or get a ball and weld a post that has been set in a 5 gallon bucket of concrete and lock that to your trailer hitch or if you use an actual receiver i have seen people just leave the stinger attached and locked to the tongue.

Well, I park mine in the garage when at home. And when I'm in camp, I know everyone is watching it even if it's not a teardrop gathering. And if my teardrop is going to be taken by someone who is not authorized I would hope he is cought before he can get out of the campground. If not, so be it. At least there won't be any damage done to get my tear. I'll just contact the locale JohnDarns and tell them to activate thier scaner and pick up the LoJack signal being put out. With $5000+ of my hard money and 2 1/2 years of my good time to build it, if it gets stolen, I want to recover it with minimal damage. And I don't want to worry about it at a campground. I go camping to relax.

Have a good day.

That's just the way I handled my teardrop security issues.

I have the Master Lock set , it takes care of everything and you only have to keep track of one key.

I'm with Gage on this--and it's not weird because I'm with Gage on this. It's weird considering the paranoia most of us (ex) New Yorkers feel:

I ain't gonna worry about it.

It's locked up at the boatyard, I'll either be there or it'll more or less be watched at the campground…

And how difficult can it be for the cops to find a Crab being towed down Federal Highway?

At home the tear is locked in the shop.

Most of the time I camp alone and off the beaten path going on day long hikes so I use this tow lock and wrap the safety chains around the tongue, then lock the last link with the pad-lock. Also a bike safety chain through one of the rear wheels and spring.

You can add a "denver boot" thing like this. I have seen them at trailer stores but found mine on the net for a better price a couple years ago.

Just remember to remove it, I have come close wrecking the fender once or twice  :? :o

Hi

I am with Gage and Ira too, except maybe on the Lo Jack thing, as far as I can tell this is the same as the Tracker devices used in the UK, surely Thieves aint dumb enough to get caught by these in US? they are beatable by any schoolkid with a basic grasp of electronics total cost $5 max.

Pretty much any lock can be bumped, those barrel locks are even easier.
