What's a good pound rating to start at Tony?

I believe my 56-pound (!) hatch took two 120 pounders. They sure work well.

Paul it's looking great! Nice work on the hatch!

I see you did PMF on the tongue box. Will that get a piano hinge? I had this idea for a flap on the front where you have your window that lifts up to make a sort of an awning and open a screened window, if you can imagine that. Sort of like the older designs from the 30s. I was wondering if it would work to install the hinge first. protect it with a strip of tape and then sort of PMF over the entire thing so the PMF went right over the hinge to the "door" (awning) to protect it all from water. Sounds a little iffy- I'd have to do some sort of mock up. You could then take it apart and remove the tape. Maybe the best idea would be to PMF everything first, then install the hinge and a fabric strip over that.

Well, it's one of those ideas that will bounce around in my head for a while.

I don't think using a fabric seal will do a good job because it needs to flex to cover the hinge and pmf doesn't flex well and once the paint is on, it'll flex even less.

I am going to do a piano hinge for the tongue box. Initially I was going to just put a piece of wide rubber underneath but I read people use bicycle tires to wrap the piano hinge. I also found this video on youtube which gave an interesting weather seal.

When I built my tongue box, I used one of the plastic living hinges. "UV-resistant." It didn't last many years.

This is the low-profile hurricane hinge I replaced it with:

It stays dry.

George at the Teardrop Fix-it Shop in Montana sells them.

Tony,
Do you use butyl tape under the galley hinge and tongue box hinge?

3 coats for silver exterior semi gloss paint. I have a headache from the fumes but at least I'm ready for for and window installation! Just curious if butyl tape is what everyone uses to seal their doors and windows?ImageImageImageImage

I do, without any issues.

I attach the hinge on the hatch first with poly sealant. But the front of the hinge with the tape. Makes for an easier install.

Your finish looks great, BTW.

YouTube is telling me to use lap sealant around my vent fan along with butyl tape for RV. Does this apply to teardrops as well?

I use butyl tape under the vent fan. It's a moving part and thus someday, it'll fail and need replacement. I don't think it'd be fun pulling one that is sealed with polyurethane sealant.

I haven't had any leaks. It's what Grant used with his Little-Bear teardrops and that's what sold me on it. Lap sealant? Might be a good idea but I haven't used it.

Was able to work on some of my electrical. I connected the solar charger directly to the battery by passing the main power switch. But now I am questioning should it be all connected to the main battery cutoff switch. Also there is nothing connected to the load terminals on my solar charger and I'm not sure if I should be using them. I still need to wire up the rear Galley and do all the waterproofing around the Windows Doors vent and install the hinges.
For my issue with the wheels I ended up using a 5mm Universal spacer that brings out my wheel to about an inch which has salt all my issues.ImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

Not much progress because my student made it to state woodworking competition for skillsusa. Unfortunately he didn't place but he is a winner for just making it up to that level.

Took the advice of Tony Latham and poly sealed the hatch side of the hurricane hinge and butyl taped the rest. Hatch ended up being 40lbs.

Had issues with the wiring for the 4 pin connector. Somewhere 3 of the 5 i ran to the rear hatch are grounded so I have to run wires underneath now... What a pain... Took a long time diagnosing why my signal lights weren't working.ImageImageImageImage
