Quick Weekender with the Escape Pod

Postby shootr » Sat May 12, 2018 4:07 pm

Wow, second time out this year and it's only May (that's good for us!).

Just a Saturday til Tuesday jaunt up 2 hours north of Phoenix to Pinegrove Campground by Lake Mary. Red Flag conditions - no fires or cigars :-(

But instead of 105 degrees it's breezy mid 60's - wonderful!

It looks so tiny compared to your truck. :D the place looks very nice and relaxing.

Walnut Canyon and Meteor Crater.

Man, camping when it's chilly without a fire kinda stinks...

Can anyone see the flag and airplane wing in the meteor crater picture ? Yes a airplane crashed down there.

Had not heard the airplane story...But here's a crop of the flag and a 6' astronaut cutout to give some scale to the size of the crater:

The tiny white splotch is where the flag/astronaut are:

Lava River Cave outside of Flagstaff - THIS was the highlight of the trip!

Looks great. The crater and lave tubes are on the short list to do. We’ll be heading up to Flag for Overland Expo this weekend. Probably just the day. Need to get the camper finished.

Cigars fall under the fire ban?

With our fire bans the little propane fire pits make sense. We are thinking of one.

A plane flew into the crater and could not get out. They found that a crashed plane attracts more planes. So they dumped the main part of the plane in the mine shaft. Some smaller parts are still on the crater floor.
