Fart Catcher Foamie Build

Postby PatrickM » Sat May 19, 2018 1:55 pm

1st – thank you to all that have contributed to this knowledge base – without people willing to freely share their ideas, poor unimaginative souls such as myself would be lost to the winds of design despair. I hope that I to can contribute to this great resource in some way and thus give back for some of what I have gleaned here. Again, thank you.

I joined this site a few yrs back but never got around to building. My new jump last year into Powered Paragliding(PPG) has me needing a small camper. I was lugging my med size Roo 233 hybrid with my Pathfinder last year but the gas was killing the wallet. Better results with my Kia Soul pulling my bothers Boler.

The Boler was nice enough but I wanted something a little more to my needs(and my bother lives a couple hrs away) that would carry my PPG motor without taking apart its cage, carry some other stuff and room to sleep. Did not want it to be too claustrophobic but keep it small like the Boler.
I looked at Foamies, then aluminum framing as I am more skilled with metal working – then looked at aluminum prices – then thought about all plywood, looked at plywood weight and went back to Foamies.

So final plan is to make a foamie and build steel trailer to fit. One of the best ideas I found in my research was a separate trailer. The Fart Catcher will be detachable. Mostly as I don’t want allot of ?’s from the registration office about it so K.I.S.S it during registration and put the camper on it after the fact. And I want to have a separate utility trailer for small this and that jobs.
There are a lot of great designs here. I fell in love with the Nano Weekender when I 1st saw it, just appealed to my eye. But I needed a little more space.

I will post more soon - need to figure out how to load images

Cheers, Patrick

My rough design(subject to change without notification) -- 5’ wide

I might go with a straight vertical back – I will be challenged enough doing the front.

Got some stuff already - need to pick up some plywood, foam, glue, and drop sheets to get started.

Well found some cheaper foam on the kijiji - but rethinking foamie. Might put on the extra weight and go with ply so I can do it faster. flying season for me is here now so I need to put this together fast. I know I can do foamie if I am not rushed but would need a month with working out all the details, Plywood, most of it done in a weekend.

The problem is the more I look into things the more change my mind

What is it I really need the most - a place to crash when I go PPG flying for a weekend. For me that is a well ventilated box that will keep me dry and warm. I can take my motor cage apart so the motor will store easier

I will give it the rest of the weekend to think it over.
Cheers

That's why I'm not building anything yet. The more I read the more stuff I want to do.

So I don't plan to start building until at least the fall.

Foamie cancelled - going plywood this round
Though I thought I had a plan - biggest issue was a bunch of little things I think will take too much time and sourcing foam at a reasonable price.
Since I am building camper as removable - I will do a fast PW build and then build a foam later to match the trailer platform size, once I have source some on the used market.
Will start new thread for PW and trailer build.
Cheers

Have you seen Barak's build (clicky)?

He did a PPG storage compartment at the front. The pic you posted above does not appear to have any storage room for your rig, or am I missing something?

$70?! I get mine for $33 or so.
You could also build with EPS which is less expensive.
As far as foam walls to floors attachment.
Edge glue the foam to the top of the floor.
Then after you have the tear box built, lift it off the trailer, and wrap the canvas skin under the edge of the floor.
Extend this overlap 6" plus under the trailer, no further reinforcement needed

Personally I think a plain foam box, without the fancy angles would be quicker and easier.

I would try searching drywall and building supply companies in Ontario near you. I got my 300 Foamular from Consolidated Gypsum in Edmonton for less than big box stores. There must be similar suppliers in Ontario.

Try foundation installers and commercial construction companies, they both buy the foam by the pallet in truck loads, they may have broken, damaged or partial sheets, or partial pallets hanging around.
One of my sawfish foam kayak builders had his foam strapped to the car roof.
On the way home the wind broke his foam.
He picked up all the pieces and glued them back together.
His kayak is stronger than it would be without the extra glue joints.
He was going for very low budget, so he used EPS, he found a glass installer that had a pile of 2" EPS sheets, the glass panels are shipped between them.
