Hello from Los Angeles

Postby eLink » Tue Nov 13, 2018 6:30 pm

Hello,
My name is Erik, I am an architect in Los Angeles and I am interested in building my own teardrop trailer.
I really like the simple profile and "bulldog" stance of the standard Benroy design, but I will need to enlarge a bit it to fit my tall body (I'm 6'-7"). So I am going to use an Ironton 5x8 and cantilever the platform fore and aft.
I intend to use it for weekend camping and winter ski trips.
I have learned a lot from this forum so far, but I'm sure I will have more questions, and I will grateful to receive any tips and critiques. I hope to have my camper built within a year.
Best Regards,
Erik

Welcome Erik,

A Benroy profile can be easily be lengthened to fit you comfortably. Have you considered building a custom teardrop trailer frame, or having one built to your specifications?

An approx. 5' x 10' Benroy on a custom frame could enable you to build a quality teardrop that fits your needs and stature very well.

Looks like a great build.
Were you able to keep the sidewalls inside a single 4 x 8 sheet?

I'm going to use a Northern Tool 5x8, and I will extend the wood platform 6 inches front and back. I have started working out the details...

The overall size is going to be 4.5' x 10'. I haven't decided yet whether I will use single 5x10 birch plywood or multiple 5x5 pieces for the walls and floor. 5x5 pieces are cheaper, but more work is necessary.
I'm thinking about having all the cuts done by my local CNC shop, including hatch spars and cabinetry.

Trying to decide on a name for the camper...
A friend of mine suggested "Fart Locker". Funny, but I would use the German word for Journey and call it "Fahrt Locker" instead.

Speaking of German, the word for caravan camper is Wohnwagen. With a little play on words I could name it "The Fun-wagon".

But I recently discovered a new English slang word: Coddiwomple, “to travel in a purposeful manner towards a vague destination”. So I kinda think "The Coddiwompler" could be an appropriate name.
What do you think?
