tire/fender clearance

Postby dwgriff1 » Sun Jul 16, 2006 1:53 pm

There was something a bit back about this. Sorry, but I can't find it.

How much vertical space should be between the tire and the fender. I am using a torflex axle -- Model 8, I think.

In other words, under load and stress, how much will my Torflex flex?

Dave,

In theory, I can't answer your question, but in practice, I had mine set at about 1" clearance for a while, pulled it quite a bit, and the tires never hit the fenders. That was with a 2000 pound axel under a 1250, +,- teardrop.

Hey Dave. When i mounted my fenders I used a 6" piece of 2x4 and 1x4 together, so that gave me about 2 1/4 inches of clearance at the top of my wheel. I have a 1700# axle and about 1300# tear when loaded. I got to thinking about it being too close after I mounted it, but it hasn't rubbed yet. I then went to the dexter axle site and found the mounting instructions. Here is the quote: "Fender clearance; allow 3" over the tire at full load" Hope I didn't mess up :worship: I've already cut and mounted the fenders so if they ever rub, I'l have to get a couple more and mount them higher. I do like the way they hug the tires like I have them now tho

I used the scientific method. Find out what looks best. I just put blocks on the tires and set the fender on top of them.

Andrew posted that information in this message

I would think it would be more or less the same for all the torsion axles...

The "scientific" method of Asianflava is close to my "artistic" system -- If it looks good, make it happen.

Most of you were pretty much in agreement, I'll go with 2 1/2 to 3". My load is lighter, about 500 pound load on a 800 pound axle.

Now if I can decide on the design to use (buying is not an option -- for artistic as well as budget resons!!).

Thanks.
