New build in Ireland

Postby Peterireland » Wed Aug 07, 2019 3:24 am

Hi All,
Peter here in Ireland.
I am just about to commence my build of a tear drop.
Basic plywood build, that I am copying most ideas from similar ones that I have seen on line.

Things I am struggling with is getting some materials in Ireland.
Can anyone advise if there are places ideally in Ireland, or else in the UK, where I can get a suitable door, hurricane Hinge for the hatch etc.

I am very comfortable with woodwork, but not so much with metal work, so I was trying to avoid building my own door, as I am worried about getting a suitable seal on it, unless anyone has any god examples of how to do so, with fairly off the shelf materials.

There is no real market for the specialist stuff in Ireland, from what I can see, so I need to try to source standard materials for it all.
I can get some things from Ebay in the states, but delivery charges to Ireland are crazy, so ideally I will try to just source things in Ireland / UK.

Thanks guys

You can do a seal on your own plywood door. Here are a few shots of mine. I cut the jamb out of 4mm ply and stained it the darker colour. I expected to still need rubber but it turned out to work without. The latch is from the local hardware store ImageImageImageImage

Any other options people have used for a hinge for the hatch.
Can't seem to find hurricane hinges in Ireland.
Are they known as any other name perhaps?

There are several builders that have had luck using a piano hinge. It has to be covered with a rubber strip which is held down by aluminum strap screwed to both sides of the hinge.

I used screen door hardware. Something like that should be available.
