Thanks RJ.
I’m not sure what will be covering the tires. They will clear the floor no matter what the axle does, so the box will have to be no more than 3” high. Still studying that one.

The door will be fun, I’m sure. I keep thinking about making a door or buying one (too many $$$ for that). But, having a 100 year old will be neat. So, my intent is to make it like a ‘pre-ung’ door you buy at the big box store. That is, make a frame and hang/seal the door in that frame. Then cut the hole for the frame. We will see...

:?

I couldn’t tolerate sitting... so I went out and skinned the front wall. I used glue and screws. The screws are called self drilling lath screws. I always thought of them as ‘finish screws’. Anyway, they are pretty neat. Nice wide, good looking head that holds well.

I’m not sure what is going on with the pics. All I do is resize them for the forum and use the normal ‘upload attachment’ option. I wonder if the resize program is making it into some odd format...

For pics I use the Tapatalk app on the phone to post. I take the photo on the phone then use the add photos button in a post and it does the rest. No messing about.

I framed the second of the three walls today. Hope to get the skin on it tomorrow.

I also found another camper shell with some neat windows. Negotiations for an old piece of junk shell are in progress.

Wouldn't surprise me if you get it for free and he delivers! :)

I’m afraid that it is one of those ‘valuable’ things that people keep around. “It belonged to my EX. It is a good one. “ It is all steel, nobody would EVER use it as a camper again, but she is going to ask ‘her brother’ about getting rid of it. I hope to get it free, but free won’t be easy. It weighs a ton and I’ll have to drive my tractor over there, pull the trailer over there and then get rid of the junk even if it is free. Sigh...

I finished the third wall today. Hopefully the weather will cooperate and I can get them installed on the trailer tomorrow.

The Lazy T is alive! I got all three walls installed and then conjured up the Egyptians to help me get the HEAVY fiberglass topper onto the walls. It is perfect!

And, yes of course the tongue will be shortened a lot.

:D

I put a chair in there, one that is about as high as my bed will be. Lots of headroom. This thing is almost a stander. The bed will be a super twin mattress 39” x 80”.

Now the fun begins. Designing and building the galley and rear doors.

Also, the door and frame need to be built as well as some windows are getting replaced.
GOOD day!

I am really enjoying re-reading the build and tips threads. I know how I like to camp and cook and intend to make this little rig EXACTLY for my needs. I’ll be camping alone (wife doesn’t like camping) or with the grandkids. My bed won’t be on the floor, but raised like a normal bed and will always be there to flop on for a nap.
The galley will hold a pull out propane stove and be used to cook outside or at least on swing out tailgate tables. This next part... finalizing and building the bed and galley will be a hoot. The door project is intimidating, but I think it will be worth the trouble to use that antique side door.

I’m doing my best to get this ready for winter. The topper is bolted down at the four corners so it can’t blow away. The main structural cross member (strength for the rear of the box) is in place as is the front support for the bed. The hollow core door (the BED) was tested (16” to top of board) and I love it. No cabinets yet of course, but right now I have a 20” x 80” open floor space to wander around in, beside the bed. Love that MORE!
Tomorrow, I hope to get at least a coat of paint on the outside and rig some sort of closure for the lower half of the back. That will probably be a tarp for now since there is NO door yet. LOL... Then I’ll drill the rest of the bolt holes for the topper and raise one side at a time, coat with sealant and the edge trim and bolt it down.
I did decide on a color for the outside for now. Of all things, it is called “Praline”. I call it ‘Nevada Dirt’.

I bought one gallon to see how I like it. Semi gloss acrylic house paint.

I also sat the tongue box on the tongue and as I hoped, it works. The lid requires a fairly large space behind it to open properly, and that appears to be large enough to hold two spare tires, as planned. Having fun here.

I’m trying to get the Lazy T ready for bad weather. I put 3 coats of ‘primer’ (actually just 100% acrylic house paint) on the skin and taped up the missing window hole. I think I will end up cutting a piece of plywood to go across the back of the box, possibly hinging it in the middle so I can get in to work. (No main door yet). Here’s the beast with the box on the tongue in approximately the position where it will ride. Plenty of room for the battery in front of that too.

I can’t work much on the galley area since that is my only way IN right now. :? But, here is a view of my luxurious 39x80 bed.

Note the crutch holding up the hatch. It will be replaced with legs from an old EZup top, as suggested by another member. Then the crutch will become a table support somewhere.

AND, another brilliant idea from a member comes to this build. Plastic boxes for wheel wells. They are there now to keep mice out, but will probably be cut down in width and used as permanent wheel wells later. Once I get the back wall closed in temporarily, the thing will be mouse and weather proof.

I like it, pickup camper shell with a little more head room. A very logical approach, most people "over think" every decision. The end results will be a very usable and inexpensive camper. Good job.
I wish I were as smart today as I was at 18.
