Undercoating options (plywood)

Postby peterlevins » Sun Dec 15, 2019 7:38 pm

Time has come to prep the underside. After much research, I was set to use a top quality house paint and primer but the more I think, the more I question myself. So, I’m posting to see what the popular method is. Image

Check out this thread that is running now on the same subject. It says Flour, but he meant floor.

I bought a gallon of Tremclad rust paint for the frame, should have just bought a quart. But needing to paint the bottom of the floor I used the rust paint. It is an oil based paint and seems to stick well enough on wood. Many years ago I used some on monitor speakers for a band, it took a beating. I am putting foam underneath the floor and it was more for moisture proofing than anything. If anything I would go for an oil based paint.

I opted for black beauty fence post paint. Figure if its supposed to protect fence posts in the ground from moisture it will work for the bottom of a camper. Then i added insulation below that. 5 years and thousands of miles this spring and so far so good
My build, 5x8 modified benroy "Smiles to go". Started April 2nd 2015, first trip August 2nd 2015.

I went with an oil based primer and 3 coats of gloss latex
The wood can expand and contract and breathe

Glued and screwed. Tight fit is key

Marine ply is not necessary for builds. Same glues are used. I used 3/4 AC ply. The oil base primer seeps in to the wood

Some even go bare wood for the bottom. Good prep and paint is all you need.
They all say, it rots from the top down so floor is the least in need of coating
