20 volt dewalt batteries 12 volt appliances

Postby yycwrangler » Thu Dec 31, 2020 4:06 pm

does anyone know if I can use my 20 volt DeWalt batteries to power 12 volt appliances in my trailer. Mostly looking at led lights and low voltage things. I see an adapter than can be purchased but all it is, is a unit that you connect your 20 volt batteries to and have 2 wires running out of it. (see below). What about using an invertor

20V will most likely cause damage to most 12V devices. If not outright damaging the device, it may significantly reduce the lifespan..

I would not advise it.

Many “12 volt” things will run on up to 15 volts because they ‘plug in’ to a vehicle and the alternator can sometimes produce more than 13 or 14 volts. The battery is there to provide a cushion in that case.

I am trying to figure out if I can run my Ryobi fan on 12 volts. The fan will run on a Ryobi 18 volt tool battery OR direct 110 volt plug in. I think I will make a jumper and see if it will operate on 12 volts safely.

I'd think and 18vdc fan would run on 12vdc, just a little slower.

DC-DC "Buck" converter is what you need, from the higher V down to ~13V.

Make sure sized to handle 29+% more amps current than you will ever draw through it, a fuse will help with that.

Cheap ones usually don't have good OCP

I'd just buy the 12vdc battery if you need the DC to DC converter. It is a drill battery with probably only 3 to 4 aH of capacity. Not much to work with and the converter will waste about 15% off the top.

I used to get these batteries for free (so called dead) and harvest the cells. From that would build up my battery bank according the volt/ah I wanted. It was a great source for lithium 18650 batteries, especially FREE!!! Now folks are buying those batteries..

If these are just a couple you have around, go with the buck converter. If you getting a cheap supply, harvest and build to suit your requirement.

Find out the max amps of the "12V" output

"can heat the coat" does not inspire confidence
